My wife is working there for a week starting Sunday, any tips other than don't leave your hotel room and only use the company driver?
If it's just for a week then I doubt there'll be much time for anything other than the travelling, going to work, eating and sleeping. I'd suggest she just tries to see a bit of the place through her hotel/office/car window and enjoy the trip.As a wider point, India isn't a one way trip to hell as some posters above seem to think. Sure, if your only acceptable holiday is 2 weeks in Monaco then it isn't for you, and if you don't want to have any experience of how the other half live then a stay is unlikely to appeal, but please don't think the place is without appeal - or that you'll be killed to death with every footstep. I'd imagine you'll see more smiling faces within 50 yards of your hotel in India than in any other country in the world - certainly more than in Monaco.

That's the reply we were hoping for, I think common sense is important in situations like this! As a wider point, India isn't a one way trip to hell as some posters above seem to think. Human rights and England don't always go in the same sentance.
As much as this attack sickens me, when politicans who are in effect culpable of genoicde still hold power you do have to wonder what will really change.

India is improving but human rights abuses are completely ignored and quite often orchestrated by those in power.

The victim should have surrendered when surrounded by six men, at least it could have saved her intestines

Went to Goa once, I call it India Lite, and that was bad enough. Indian guys would come from all over the country to just stand on the beach and letch after Western girls. I would speak to them and they were doctors and dentists and every other professional working type. They also thought that it was perfectly acceptable to grope Western women in the bars and clubs. OK this was 20 years ago and it could also be argued that the girls should have been covered up in respect to the laws and religion of the country but it still shouldn't have caused the blokes to behave that way.
Personally I have never been comfortable with holidaying in countries far poorer than my own.
I visited India alone for work a couple of years ago. Yes, I had a nice hotel and a driver to get me to the office, but the only hassle I got when out was from beggars and tuk tuk drivers trying to canvass for business.
In a lot of ways it's good that a spotlight is being shone on India over sexual harassment, rape and sexual assault, but it also allows a lot of people to pretend that this kind of thing doesn't happen in their country. There's an awful lot of holier-than-thou going on in the media over this.

The problem is that the notion people away from teh western culture have is that "westernised" girls are up for it etc - hence any grabbingWent to Goa once, I call it India Lite, and that was bad enough. now india is evolving at such an incredible place - there's people who would easily blend with life in the uk and there's those that would blend in life in Saudi. the generation gap in social thinking is just as wide as the wealth gap
Ironically, despite being a dangerous destination for young women, you still get loads of ra girls going there to "see the real Indi-yarrrrrr", which is code for going on a safari where the savannah is a slum and the big 5 is poverty, disease, death, hunger and human misery.
They are such a backwards country and despite the money they are making on the world stage, their culture is so backwards and so far behind even China (who are themselves a terrible example) it's unreal.

The 'saved her intestines' comment confused me until one of my Indian colleagues returned to work yesterday having been in India over the Festive period.
He says that the reaction to the incident is less of a response to the rape than to the other things they did to her and why she died. I've put it in a 'Spoiler' below so that people can choose to reveal or not. It's not nice. Really. Mods can delete if requied.
The girl seemingly had the iron bar that she and her boyfriend were beaten with repeatedly inserted into her vagina with such force that when it was withdrawn it brought some lower intestine out with it. She suffered gangrene in many of her organs due to the presence of the dirty bar within her torso.
My colleague also mentioned that one of his taxi drivers offered the opinion that the guys should just have killed the victims outright so that they would not be caught. No witness, no 1st hand evidence. According to my colleague there is a huge problem with people from rural areas coming into the cities with barbarian style views who end up in public service jobs like bus and taxi driver work.

Dear god! What on earth possesses people to do things like that.He says that the reaction to the incident is less of a response to the rape than to the other things they did to her and why she died. I used to have family who lived in Kenya. They said that if people mugged you out there, they would kill you and throw you into the bush. It's better for them to have no witness and to let nature take its course on the body, rather than to let someone live and point them out.
