It is difficult really, I no longer really understand the requirements to obtain a knighthood or some other form of honour.

These Honours have been devalued over the past years to the point of being simply baubles handed out.

I agree. You don't deserve one just because you've won a sport at the Olympics. After all, that is what the gold medal is for...

In part, I agree with the sentiment of this thread.

On the other hand, Wiggins did manage to become the first Englishman to win the Tour de France. An Englishman, winning, in France. The first one to do it.

I think for managing that feat and being the first to do it, and probably pissing the French off, he deserves a gong of some sort. I would have thought an MBE or something would have sufficed, though.

Also agree. People with £million sponsor deals, captains of industry with rank and high income, actors and actresses with fame and fortune, these people are not fit for honours, so perhaps bizarrely the unfit and devalued honours system fits them well. It doesn't matter how much charity work they do when bored with counting their houses and money, with so much more time on their hands they might as well do something to assauage their guilt. Honours are more fittingly awarded to people who perform a lifetime of dedication to menial tasks, and though peerages need to be removed completely it would be more fitting to see MBE, OBE, CBE awarded for 20, 30, 40 years' continuous and dedicated services to roadsweeping or public convenience toilet cleaning.

KCB/DCB and peerages are best kept for the UK equivalent of Mother Theresa and male equivalents (not necessarily religious orders but representing a lifetime of dedication to the needs of others on pittance pay).

Considering other knighthoods that get dished out, he should have been given a peeridge

The thing that annoys me is Cherrie Blair and Hector Sants getting awards, it also seems that if you are a civil servant you have a much higher chance of getting an award.
^^^ This yes just don't mention "Sir Hector"!! Grrrrrr

An excellent and well-deserved award for Wiggo. Real sporting star.

(Knighthoods should be automatic for anyone who beats the French at anything....) biggrin

Seems a bit OTT although he has had a fantastic year. Hopefully everything he's achieved has been legit - can't always tell with professional cyclists.

It wasn't a stand up joke it was a facetious comment based on any level celebrity getting a Knighthood. Sorry you didn't get it given your approval is so important rolleyes

I don't understand the criteria anymore and has been suggested this simply highlights how they've been devalued.

I thought you had to make a positive contribution to society, not simply line the pockets of a political party or pedal or run faster than someone else.

Sir Bradley, not Sir Wiggins.

Well deserved in my opinion but for winning the TdF rather than the Olympics.

I'm surprised he has gotten away with that considering he was caught tax dodging after the Olympics. He has a cheek.

As he is a rather vocal section in the cycling fraternity against the use of drugs and the historic use of drugs in cycling, I find it unlikely.

Have a look on the sky news interview and he would appear to be complete agreement- far more worthy people out there.

I don't remember Lance Armstrong actively campaigning to get drugs and drugs cheats thrown out, but I may be wrong.

I know he campaigned on lots of other things, but I don't recall that.
