Sad news coming through via Jonathan Agnew's Twitter feed a few minutes ago.

A gentleman who was quietly efficient in his work, very studious and knowledgable but with a great sense of humour too. Loved his cricket and the world of cricket loved him.

Succumbed to terminal cancer this morning aged just 67.

RIP CM-J.

What a sad way to start a new year.
One of the great voices of TMS.

Fondly and warmly remembered.

Blimey, two stalwarts of The Times I always enjoyed reading have gone in a short space...William Rees-Mogg and CMJ. Athers has done a decent job of replacing CMJ, but if Anatole Kaletsky and Simon Barnes bugger off the mortal coil soon there will be no-one left for me to read!

Can hear his voice in my head - like John Peel in a way. Hearing is believing - you don't need to see.

Sad news, grew up listening to TMS and remember when CMJ was the new boy. frown

I like to think he'll be somewhere enjoying a nice glass of red now with Jonners, the Boil, the Alderman, Fiery Fred and the great John Arlott.

I just saw whilst reading the CMJ stuff on the BBC that Tony Greig died as well? Very sad, another part of my youth gone. I was a schoolboy during the famous "grovel" series. He was rightly criticised for that but he was a great competitor who never gave in. Although he was pilloried for his involvement with Packer it changed the face of cricket forever and the fortunes of cricketers with it.

All the Sundays carried big Greig spreads. CMJ next weekend.

Remember talking to him down at Hove when Martin made his debut. Just a proud dad.
