For those of you who haven't been reading the Lounge's snow thread - this isn't one of those events that's going to go away. It's been forecast for a few days and it's not now about if it will happen but who's going to get wallopped.

Enjoy wink

Agreed.

I quite like looking at weather models as a hobby and we are now less than 48 hours away from the predicted start of snow coming in from the west and spreading across the country.

Normally, it can all be taken with a pinch of salt but it is now obvious that some places in England are going to get a serious amount of snow. Where that is, who knows.

If current predictions are right (note - if) then most of the country will see 12+ hrs of continuous snow from midday Friday onwards, West a bit earlier.

If the models are correct, this could be a seriously disruptive event.

Watching with interest, if the models are still the same this time tomorrow, batten down the hatches.

Certainly in London a good coat and proper footwear and you can get to work or shops or school etc. you're not reliant on a car in the same way. But no one goes outside to clear the pavement etc which would make things better.

But I'm only here half the time, the rest of the time we're in the West Country and we don't really have problems there when it snows.

I think what I am trying to get at is that we all know when the snow is coming. We all know it won't last more than a few days generally so why are idiots trying to drive to the shops when it has snowed etc? Just a little bit of common sense, planning and selflessness and the snow isn't really quite the issue that the media love to make it out to be.

They'll always be some people genuinely inconvenienced but far the vast majority just seem to inconvenience themselves through not engaging brain.

I've had this conversation with you in the snow thread already but it isn't happening everywhere, I'm almost temped to offer a bet on a lack of decent snow fall on Friday in Plymouth.

The rest of the country will ground to a halt. We won't.

The forecast is now for blizzard conditions accross the country on from Friday morning onwards.

Even if we only get an inch of actual snow, the high winds are going to make it 10 times worse.

But it doesn't.

On the trip in question, I can distinctly remember looking at the snow blowers and ploughs at East Mids airport as I walked up the step into the aircraft, at which time there was no snow. In the event, it seems the equipment on hand was not servicable or adequate for the task - that's part of the issue. It seldom gets used/tested and so we don't really know/ensure it's up to scratch.
In fairness, we did go though a period of very little snow south of Scotland - I can only remember 1 winter between about 1988 and 2009 when there was snow up in the North West (where I grew up), which I think would have been early 1994.

According to an article I read a couple of years ago, the Department for Transport was lulled into a false sense of security by this, compounded by climate forecasting models which stated that snow like 2009 was a once in 100 year event now that AGW was taking hold. Until we got worse snow the following year.
It's only now that they are starting to get their act together, when they have realised that their climate models are a load of bks.

Don't worry everyone, I'm buying a new Range Rover so it should all be gone in a week or so. If I'd known I would've ordered it earlier.

I just checked the Lidl website on the off chance - Thursday's special offer is Snow Chains, £20 per set. I'll be popping in on my way to work tomorrow.

Just checked and the snow is now going to miss the UK and land in Austria about 10pm Saturday night.

This means my Saturday morning flight will no longer be cancelled!

Grab some horse burgers while you're in there. They should give a bit of grip if you get stuck.

Great, my choices of work transport are a road bike with anorexic tyres and a fat-tyred 300bhp RWD car not renowned for its snow abilities. Lucky I bought some new walking shoes the other day then!

You can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. wink

Cannibalism surely?

I think we may be in the wrong thread.

Back to the snow; Quite grumpy that I don't have a RWD car to hand for Friday, I do like a bit of playing in the snow.

On of the most embarrassing things about being a Brit abroad (and with football hooligans etc., God knows there's plenty) is our inability to cope with a mere dusting of snow. A few years back I was strand3ed overnight in arctic Finland (the airport temp there was about -17 and there was plenty of snow in evidence) because nearly every UK airport had shut down due to an 'enormous' (i.e. a few inches) snowfall.
I think that's a bit of a myth - we have offices all over Europe and they get messed up by snow at some point every year, particularly while it's actually snowing, or the next morning if it has snowed overnight.

I was also talking to business colleagues from Ottawa and they can't even get their cars off their drives the day after overnight snow - they have to wait for contractors to come and clear them.

Yes but, the amount of snowfall which reduces UK to a dithering wreck is significantly less than that which causes issues for other Northern European countries, and having lived in Scandinavia, we are a considered to be a joke.

I suppose that's got to be down to the old favourite of winter tyres (studded?) and I would guess, lower traffic density?
