Not sure if it has been mentioned, but over the weekend aunty Beeb replayed the documentary about winter 1963/64 first shown (I think) in 1964.

Fronted by Cliff Mitchelmore (sic) it cobbled together contemporaneous accounts of how the UK made it through that particular 'cold snap', with a final flourish of facts and figures on cost vs benefit of adequate machinery and systems to cope etc.

After nearly 50 years the very same arguments continue...
oooh i'll look for that on I player then
here loads schools closed but its working quite well roads good pavements on the whole good

But wouldn't heated runways be cheaper than tooling up with machinery?
Do you have any idea how much energy it would take to melt snow over the huge area required ?
Yup. Hence the question as I don't know whether the cost would be greater or less than the cost of physical machinery and the loss of revenues.

Our uni (Bath) has just postponed another round of exams because of the snow.

The problem is that it's ~1 mile at a 1/10 gradient up to the uni in pretty much any direction and vehicles just can't get up if any snow settles on the roads.

So it's an inconvenience, but understandable.

Not sure if serious?

A 1 mile walk is too far?

The car park is at the top of hill. Not everyone lives at the bottom or gets the bus to the bottom.

It's not that cold or snowy - surely a bit of salt would clear the approach roads?

So if you don't live at the bottom of the hill, you get there via whatever means you normally do, and then walk up it, I'd have thought?

In a parking space? I don't know, I used to walk two miles each way to university, and it was a different one. It's a sorry state of affairs when 'I couldn't think where to park' might be reason enough to miss an exam, isn't it?

If it's Bath Spa Uni, then it'd be a nightmare to drive up to in anything other than a 4X4, and there's definitely nowhere to dump your car off the campus either. And it's not exactly in Bath wink

Anywhere you like, there's nobody out there.

Can't help but be embarrassed by today's always say die attitude, frankly.

Silliness of the snowy order! It's like one of those Sci-fi movies where machines and cars stop working and everyone behaves like headless chickens!!!

Bath Uni, not Spa.
It's a problem because its exam season.
Lectures might still go ahead in similar conditions, but with exams you either get everyone there or you can't do it, so if there are people living outside of Bath who get stuck at home or students with disabilities who cannot walk up to the uni (most students will be 2.5 or more miles away) you can't go ahead with them.

TBH, I think some airports use a combination of both. Heating will prevent it freezing, but is not going to be effective when dealing with a very large dump of snow - for that mechanical equipment is still the way. I'd guesstime the cost of one of those fancy Volvo runway clearers must be about £250k.

Ah well that's different. He can drive my car up to the car park - it's got winter tyres and has had no problem with the steep hills around Sheffield so far. I'd be much obliged if you could take it to a car wash on the way back by way of payment, mcdjl, as it's filthy at the moment.

I would imagine the University can make arrangements for those with disabilities.

The rest can either walk, or use whatever means they normally do to get to the bottom of the towering mountain hill and then walk up.

People miss exams all the time due to illness, forgetfulness, idleness and disorganisation. Universities can cope.

Thanks for the offer but as I don't want to go to Bath, no need smile

At your mum's house. !!!!!!

Massive, massive amounts of homo going on here. How did students get to campus prior to cars being affordable to people without jobs.

There is not a proper uni in this country that requires a car in order for a student to reach campus.

Genuinely, this is so gay it is sad.

Yours sincerely,

Last Man Standing photograph, Bath Uni Ball 1991.

(Photo of 17, 9 of us from Reading so Bath Uni has always been full of pussies) biggrin
