In the UK most trauma based below knee amputations do end 5-6 inches below the knee, using the calf muscle to wrap up around the bone and form the stump(although there are always exceptions). Amputations to aid mobility with birth defects can longer for a number reasons. Sometimes the calf is too withered to make a stump, or the deformed ankle joint may make a better stump.
