Most deal with it with more style than he did.

In south Africa there are measures in place to allow for it however your life must be being threatened. Reeva was no threat to him and the fact he shot her 4 times worries me greatly.
Not knowing the facts, this is all speculation. However, being woken at 4 o'clock in the morning by an intruder, in a country where death at the hands of someone who is after your wallet and laptop is not an unusual occurrence, you're not likely to hang about asking very nicely if they'd mind identifying themselves.
I'd imagine that in those circumstances you're not likely to be thinking as clearly as you otherwise would be, and self-preservation kicks in.

Not even shout "my finger is on the trigger, I can kill you right now. Who wre you?"

Just... shoot them.

I'm not buying the burglar argument.
He lived on a well protected camp with guards and controlled entrances...
Being woken and the very first thing you do is reach for a gun, immediately followed by firing the thing sounds very weird to me....I mean we all know his reactions are pretty good, but even so, you'd think he'd be able ascertain threat, and that the 'person' was female...resembled someone he loved etc...

Unless she went in with a balaclava, swag bag and a torch...??

A case of murder has been opened.
That sounds quite a bit more serious than a can of whoop-ass.

It's a different attitude to life over there.

You don't know if the intruder is also wielding a firearm and likely to shoot at the sound of your voice.

Oh come on, he lived with her!! You wake up in the middle of the night, find your wife has got out of bed, so you grab a gun, load it, take the safety catch off, walk down stairs (actually can he walk down stairs? - No, it must have been a bungalow) you see someone in the kitchen drinking a glass of water, she says 'Hi, sorry did I wake you?' so you shoot her four times in the head. rolleyes

That's exactly what happened, did it? rolleyes

ETA Because the facts are yet forthcoming, and you lot know as much about living in SA as an Eskimo knows about life in the Congo, I'll step away from this thread for a while.

Whatever happened, it's a tragedy for all involved.

Very sad if true, South Africa needs to get some control of its crime problem.
Or Oscar needs to get some control of his trigger finger...

Yeah I hear bits and bobs from South African friends.

I can't see how he's not in some way at fault - otherwise you've apparently got a licence to shoot anything.

I've a good friend who lived in Zimbabwe all her life with her sister.

Now that's a place where you shoot first and ask questions later. eek
Makes SA look good.

I'm not convinced it's sufficiently different to excuse this.

I thought Pretoria was a nice place when I went 5yrs ago. And I strongly suspect the place he lived will have been amongst the safer there.

Very bizarre.

Yep, just to make sure.

More serioulsy though, I suspect this will not go well for him.

Pistols, not matter how well trained, have been proven to be incredibly inaccurate in the heat of the moment, very difficult to hit a moving target even from just a few feet away apparently.

So you think someone is breaking into your house, you wait in the dark, with the fear rushing through you, and fire at the person. The chances of actually hitting them in the head, remote. Maybe in the arm yes as you're aiming for the body.

So he shoots the intruder, hits them in the arm, they scream and go down and then he wanders over and pops one in the head.

No way he's doing that in the dark or without recognising his GF.

All very strange, condolensces to her and her family.

I suspect a 'domestic' myself. Time will tell, maybe.

I warmed to him after he apolgised for his remarks after the 200m final. He seemed quite likable for a South African.

Thank god he didn't have a gun.
