Refusing to debate because of nationality is ridiculous. What if the other chap had said 'I refuse to debate with Scotsmen' and walked out.
I very much doubt it would cause this furor.

It's a shame that right from the start the OP threw up the clusterfk of anti-semitism, racism and Nazis.

In my opinion, if you want to offer yourself up as a serious candidate in debates, it's not acceptable to walk out based on someone's nationality.

GG is a knob. Always has been. Always will be.

He's the MP for Bradford West!! Walking out of a discussion with an Israeli will have made him a hero to the vast majority of his constituents, and increased his chances of re-election, that's why he walked out.
Hasn't anyone noticed that he's even taken to wearing 'Muslim' style jackets now? As someone mentioned before, when he had his radio show on Talk Sport he simply refused to have a discussion with any caller who opposed his views, the man is a slimy, but very media savvy, greaseball.

There is no apartheid in Israel. Arab citizens have the same legal, voting and civil rights as Jewish citizens.

Galloway is confusing State-sanctioned racism with security measures against hostile external forces. He also appears not to grasp the concept of 'debate'.

Still, what do you expect from a bloke who sucked up to a self-confessed mass-murderer and tyrant ("Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability")?

Do the Palestinians in the West Bank have the same legal, voting, and civil rights as the Israelis?

Who exactly are the hostile xternal forces - the settlers or the Palestinians?

Without trying to get Godwin in 5 posts, but couldn't the same be said about Hitler or even Lenin in 1917? Neither of them had been particularly unpleasant, but what their political belief begat was untold misery for millions of people.

(Playing devils advocate of course).
On a very narrow, not to say nitpicking, point, Hitler in 1917 was merely a not-very-good soldier in the German army.

I think Galloway was rude and stupid to refuse to debate this chap purely because he is Israeli. If the other guy was speaking as a representative of the settler movement then I might have some sympathy with Galloway but not if he's just a run-of-the-mill Israeli citizen.

Mat777 is I presume joking with suggestions of arrest. No crime has been committed, it's just rudeness.

He has the perfect right not to debate with someone if he so wishes, it just shows what an utter idiot and waste of time being an MP he is though.

If he says he will not debate with a person because of the country he comes from, that is clearly a racist statement.
I also disagree with this.

When GG was criticised for saluting Saddam’s Hussein’s ‘courage’, ‘strength’ and ‘indefatigability’, he claimed, falsely, that he was addressing the Iraqi nation – and said his critics should be able to see the difference between the people and the regime.

It’s strange that GG is so keen on this distinction when praising a blood-stained dictator, but seems unable to make it in the case of this student.

Care to explain why?

What could the Israeli guy say? Its not his choice that he is Israeli, he was born there through no fault of his own. GG is discriminating him entirely based on his nationality. Its essentially racism.

So just what are George Galloway's principles? They allowed him to meet cordially with Uday Hussein and Tariq Ali and even Saddam Hussein himself. They allowed him to testify to the US Senate who had backed the war on Iraq that he so violently opposed, and a host of other things listed here.

However not only do these principles prohibit him from engaging in debate with an undergraduate student simply because he happens to be Israeli, but he is so absolutely in thrall to these principles that he will march out of a scheduled debate in the middle of his opponents opening speech, because he suddenly discovers that Eylon Aslan-Levy isn't as English as he sounds.

He most probably does sincerely believe in his cause, whatever that may be, but calling him principled is a bit of a stretch.

No they don't have the same rights at all. Also, Israeli jews are the most openly racist creatures you could meet, not just with the Palestinians / Arab Israelis but with any non jews, like my good self. The amount of times I've been asked " why are you here? You're not jewish " is too numerous to mention.

I think Galloway wasn't told the bloke was Israeli, and he knows only too well that trying to debate with them is like banging your head on a brick wall. You will not get anywhere with the arrogant, racist pricks.

And that's me done on this subject.

George Galloway is often crass. So are people who label critics of Israel as being anti semetic.

Occasionally you'll have Israeli and Palastinian spokesmen on either side of a radio phone in. You can almost guarantee it'll become a childish bh-snipe within 60 seconds. When you spend your whole time looking back you should understand why you never move forward.
