A retired solicitor who published claims that Madeleine McCann's parents caused her death has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Mr Justice Tugendhat said 65-year-old Tony Bennett deliberately flouted legal undertakings, given in November 2009, not to repeat allegations about the couple.

Bennett's conduct, the judge said, was so serious that nothing less than a custodial sentence of three months, suspended for one year, would reflect the harm he had done.

Finding Bennett guilty of contempt of court, the judge added: "I am sure that he intended to allege that the claimants are to be suspected of causing the death of their daughter, and did in fact dispose of her body, lie about what happened and covered up what they had done

Ohh, shame on you. Now unless you want this thread 'cleaned' permanently too, repeat after me:

"The McCanns were the victims of a burglar-paedophile-ninja who left no trace."

I doubt the chap has £288,000 in cash lying around. Will they bankrupt him?

Chaps, would you care to expand on your "clean up" comments?

Well, there used to be a huge thread called 'McCanns are back'... that's no longer available. If you google 'pistonheads mccanns' and click the first result, see what you get.

OK, that "clean up" wasn't due to an agenda, it was due to contributors being unable to remain civil and reasonable. It may return at some point, but it isn't the first time that moderators have had to spend some considerable time repairing that particular thread.

Don't worry, there's plenty of work to be done on the forthcoming "Oscar Pistorius is innocent" thread.

If the quality is anything like up to the standard of the removed thread the usual PH suspects will rapidly conclude she committed suicide by pretending to be a burglar and claim the case is proven because there is no evidence to the contrary...

Which just happened to coincide exactly with Breadvans tiresome netcoppery.

C'mon , Ozzie, you know darn well that she shot herself four times in the back, and then stabbed herself three times and strangled herself for good measure, before cutting up her body and chucking it into four separate rivers in bin liners. If you say otherwise, you are just working for Team Oscar.

The only way you could know that is if you were the murderer.

As for the netcoppery, I tiresomely pointed out that this site has rules about not defaming people. We all signed up to those rules when we joined. Some members seem to struggle with this concept. The Mods run the site, for free, and they can do what they like with it. They chose to take the thread off to clean it up, and say that it will be back when that Augean (if not Sisyphean) task has been completed. I take the Mods at their word. Anyway, their gaff, their rules. if you don't like the rules, you can join one of the umpty kabillion "Maddie stolen by Paedo Space Aliens (AKA her mum)" sites, and play happily in the mud all day long.

Me Bennett gave a binding promise to the court not to carry on slagging off the McCanns. He broke that promise. Hence the finding of contempt of court.

Yes I understand that. You say slagging off I would say speculating or reporting facts and inconsistencies.

What I don't understand is why he was made to give that promise in the first place.
