A weak pound is good for the deficit.good40 said:

Osborne has done exactly what he needed to do given the circumstances.good40 said:

The markets already had this priced in, plus government borrowing rates are kept down by Merv's wheelbarrow of fresh notes to throw in to the abyss.good40 said:

Two to three days of deficit spending. A billion sounds like a lot till you consider the size of the hole in UK finances (overspending by £120Bn a year and that's before we tackle the debt itself).good40 said:

Agreed that'll probably be a train wreck. If history's any judge the government couldn't sell a faberge egg for more than a fiver.good40 said:

The hole Osbourne's in is about who said what and has very little to do with economics. An unfortunate side effect of having the county run by school debating society luvvies and broadcast to the nation be economically illiterate journalists.good40 said:

I'm blaming this one squarely on economically illiterate journalists. The level of most news readers seems to be, "Look, a number's gone down!!! That means we must be weak!!! No one wants to be weak!!!! The sky is falling!!!"good40 said:

Good luck with that one The sad truth is that anyone who'd be any good at the job is smart enough to not want it, the best of the dregs that are left is George. I'd settle for someone like David McWilliams, though to be fair the Irish probably need him more than we do right now.
David McWiliams is always worth listening to - I've read a number of his books and watched some of his on-line lectures as well.
However, even he balks and having to make hard decisions. He contemplated running for election in Ireland as an Independent but backed out in the end when he realised he would have to make far too many compromises.

Top marks best intelligent reply so far.The sad truth is that anyone who'd be any good at the job is smart enough to not want it, the best of the dregs that are left is George. I'd settle for someone like David McWilliams, though to be fair the Irish probably need him more than we do right now.

Interesting, I didn't know that. However, even he balks and having to make hard decisions. He contemplated running for election in Ireland as an Independent but backed out in the end when he realised he would have to make far too many compromises.
Ireland's loss but I don't blame him, I'm not sure I'd want to spend my life dealing with all those egos, vested interests, backstabbers, journalists and other assorted vermin who inhabit the corridors of power.
