Disabled children

His comment was abhorrent and idiotic, but I do worry that we are rapidly reaching have reached a situation where it's now going to be impossible for anybody in a position of power to utter an opinion that even remotely varies from what is politically correct.
Edited to reflect what I would say is the current position although things weren't quite so oppressive in 2011 I would like to think (the "equality & diversity" gravy train/bandwagon had left the station but wasn't up to full speed then - it is at Vmax nowadays) . The PC pendulum will swing back sooner or later... As with the CRB checks for potential & current employees situation.
Cue the discussion that "politicians" should behave better than this/no they shouldn't, why should they be expected to? circular argument .
But behaviour like this councillor's undermines the sorry remnants of the UK's political system (again) .
I was in a special school yesterday
It is a very loving, caring and difficult place to be
I have young children, which made it very, very real
However - we must at least discuss these options, we must discuss all options
Not talking about such thoughts or opinions only allows us to become the product of someone else's choices
I would ask why his opinion is wrong, is it the product of a loving society to assist these children 1 on 1 for the first 19 years of their lives only for them to end up living their lives in day centres?
I'm only asking

So (Godwin here I come) Hitler was right then? Because I am pretty sure that we fought a war to stop such madness. Do we really advocate the termition of the disabled!?!?

To me it depends on how 'faulty' the kids are & if it's likely they'll ever improve. I can't see anything except cruelty in keeping someone alive when all they'll do is drool over themselves, st in a nappy & never have higher brain functions. It is a very loving, caring and difficult place to be

There are times when quoting the details behind how the Nazi state worked are entirely appropriate.
If anyone wants to see how the line of thinking proposed by this foolish councillor pans out, take a look at the episode of "The Nazis - A Warning from History" which contains the story of the little boy, Magnus who was sent to a mental home and then murdered by the doctors.

My point is simply that I worry that society is heading towards a point where people will be unable to state views which aren't the same as those held by the moral majority. Reminds me of the expression about how it's possible to totally disagree with somebodies views, but to respect their right to air them.

The councillor should be free to express his opinion. My point is simply that I worry that society is heading towards a point where people will be unable to state views which aren't the same as those held by the moral majority. Having done so, it has to be considered, however, if he is an appropriste person to hold such a position.

Doctors have been known to make mistakes along those lines, and in other cases have no idea at all how a brain damaged baby will turn out. There have also been cases reported where people presumed to have no higher brain function turn out to be far more aware. My girlfriend's niece suffered from near terminal oxygen starvation and was delivered in an emergency. She survived and thanks to her country of residence's health service and disability help (and awesome parents) she has been supported amazingly and is thriving. At birth they had little idea whether she'd be as you say. In the end, she may well end up little different from you or I, or she may never walk or talk properly. Even at nearly three years old it is hard to tell how much damage her developing brain will work around.

Well perhaps I have a vested interest, my 4 year old daughter is disabled and suffers from cerebral palsy, due to 20 minutes of oxygen starvation to the brain when being delivered.
She cannot talk, she cannot walk further than 20 metres without the danger of falling over, she cannot hold a pencil, she dribbles and makes an almighty mess when she is feeding herself (off sorts).
80% of the time she is happy and an inspiration to the family, the remaining 20% she is frustrated, shy and unhappy at not being able to do the things that others can, and being stared at by adults when she is walking with her key walker.
So according to this councillor she should have been terminated and is a drain to society.
She never asked for this to happen to her, it is not her fault.
People can say what they like, but as EricMc has said, it is worrying when someone who is in this position does not understand that what they said would cause offence.
