Low power vacuums may well spell the end of the fitted carpet industry and a boom in laminate floors.Prof Brignell takes a well earned swipe at the Euroloon vacuum assassins...
Of course it is possible that that is what is intended and there may be ulterior motives to the "benefits".
I wonder if we might see after-market fitments for vacuums?
This reminds me of the smaller capacity cisterns for toilets that mostly seem to result in a need to flush several times and then fail to satisfactorily shift material through the drainage systems that, when built, anticipated higher instant flow rates.
What next? Reducing the power of freezers so they don't freeze things?
I have no doubt that many vacuums could be made more efficient ... but that entirely misses the point that the excuse being put forward merely shows an abject lack of proper understanding about how to make any real progress with basic technology. God help us when they get on to the complex stuff.
He makes many valid points although I am cautious about some of them.
The implication is that there is an attempt at co-ordinating thinking and planning with the intention of improving effiency. I would be quite surprised it that is still a primary part of the process and even more surprised should there be a provably successful outcome at some future point of measurement. Moreoever I think there are more appropriate ways to go about the changes being forced on us.
What happens in 2017 with the next step reduction is probably of more importance.
Such is the way of the "Save the planet" debate - nibbling away at the fruit with a waft of blight here and a balloon full of wishful thinking there.

Well, it's hard work dealing with the readership.
Just now looking at the page I noticed the top 5 of the "Most Viewed" articles list (whatever that really means) were lasted as follows.
1. Putin claims Russian forces 'could conquer Ukraine capital in two weeks'
2. Nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and others posted online by alleged hacker
3. Jennifer Lawrence and Rihanna among celebrity victims of hacked nude photos
4. Chinese authorities offer cash to promote interethnic marriages
5. Neanderthal abstract art found in Gibraltar cave
Well, I suppose we should be relatively impressed that 2 and 3 were not above 1.
Whether most of the views were coming from a cave in Gibraltar may be something to investigate.
"Nude pictures of Neanderthal Putin with Thai girlfriend" looks like a guaranteed best seller then.Just now looking at the page I noticed the top 5 of the "Most Viewed" articles list (whatever that really means) were lasted as follows.

Looking for some information from racing results records I noticed that there is a chap out there in the racing world with the same name as Dame Julia Slingo's late husband. Odd I thought. Something of a co-incidence so of course I headed for Google to see if there was more to be discovered.
It seems there is not much more than the name without spending more time than would be repaid BUT I did stumble upon a Grauniad article dated 30th Aug 2014 that is doing a puff job on Dame Julia.
It's worth reading as a potted biography and for the way it attempts to elevate her above the hurly burly of the need to discuss much to do with the weather and climate.
The questions and answers at the end of the piece are interesting. However I'm not sure whether they really tell us anything about Dame Julia rather than the message the writer wants to put over to the readership.
Don't take my word for it - read the article and see what you think.

Here's another for them from 2050, bit colder than before with a tad more rain. Nope, not likely to make any headlines ...The UN has got itself a time machine, and is broadcasting actual weather from 2050...
TX.
Edit - what exactly are they expecting our world leaders to do with these bold pledges? We can't go back to a time when the climate didn't change as it is / has always changed after all!
"Ban has asked world leaders to make "bold pledges" to fight climate change at the meeting in New York. The summit is meant as a step towards a deal by almost 200 nations, due by the end of 2015, to slow global warming."

I heard her on a R4 interview many months ago (might have been desert island discs), in which there was a lot of focus on her crusade that she promised her husband before he died. She made some very ironic statements (e.g. "people just need to look at the evidence"). At the end of the interview, I could only think that she won't let herself see the truth as it would undermine and therefore betray the promise she made to her late husband that she would essentially get climate change fixed. That kind of emotional attachment is very hard to undo, much like any cultural ingrained belief is hard to shake off (c.f. religion, tradition, etc). It's a shame, as she otherwise came across as sincere and intelligent.Looking for some information from racing results records I noticed that there is a chap out there in the racing world with the same name as Dame Julia Slingo's late husband. No Show As World Leaders Skip UN Climate Summit With UN Green Agenda A Chaotic Mess
Chinese president Xi Jinping has decided to skip a meeting of world leaders on climate change in New York, according to climate insiders, casting doubt on the summit’s potential to make progress ahead of next year’s major UN climate summit in Paris. The news will be a blow to summit organisers, coming swiftly after the announcement that Indian prime minister Narendra Modi [and German Chancellor Angela Merkel] will also miss the meeting.
Joydeep Gupta, The Guardian, 2 September 2014
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leader of the world's third-largest greenhouse gas-emitting nation, won't join his US and Chinese counterparts at a United Nations climate summit next month in New York. Modi's absence is a bit of a blow to the summit.
Zack Colman, The Washington Examiner, 14 August 2014
German daily TAZ reports that German Chancellor Angela Merkel isn’t going to bother attending the Ban Ki-Moon initiated climate conference in New York this coming September. The TAZ adds this has been “confirmed by a government spokesman“. Merkel’s decision to snub the event is likely another sign that efforts to forge a climate agreement are already dead in water. The TAZ writes: "Ultimately only Europe and very few other countries remain on board. Canada for example has opted out. Japan and Russia are also no longer taking part.”

Apropos of nothing much my eye fell on a newspaper quiz question a few hours ago that I thought offered some useful insight.
"Which type of nut is highly flammable and prone to spontaneous combustion when stored in large quantities?"
It would appear the question was lifted from Wikipedia. (See the Affected materials list.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_combustio...
which references an official looking German transport information site
http://www.tis-gdv.de/tis_e/ware/nuesse/pistazie/p...
which in turn offers up this useful identifying colour photograph.
http://www.tis-gdv.de/tis_e/ware/nuesse/pistazie/a...
Note the colour of the nuts.
This goes to suggest that a statement form which the question might be extracted could read something like ...
"Some green nuts are highly flammable and prone to spontaneous combustion when gathered together in large quantities?"
I think we might have a basis for a new naming standard term for a group of individuals with a specific set of beliefs.

UN Warning As Most Nations Fail To Ratify Kyoto Protocol Extension
The UN has expressed concern that only a handful of countries have ratified an extension to the Kyoto Protocol, more than 18 months after they agreed to do so. Kyoto, the world’s only legally binding global emissions treaty, ran out at the end of 2012. At climate talks in Doha, December 2012, the 144 parties to the treaty agreed to extend the deal to 2020. However, so far only 11 have formally backed the amendment, despite an intervention by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon in February 2013. Until all 144 parties deliver their “instruments of acceptance” to New York, the amendment will not enter into law.
Ed King, Reporting Climate Change, 04 September 2014
The top leaders of China and India, two of the world’s top emitters of greenhouse gases, aren’t planning to attend this month’s United Nations summit on climate change, according to a diplomat at the UN. President Xi Jinping of China and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have told UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon they won’t be at the day-long meeting of world leaders on Sept. 23, the person said, requesting not to be identified discussing the leaders’ plans. That deals a blow to a gathering meant to lay the groundwork for a global agreement to reduce carbon dioxide, which is blamed for global warming.

Britain To Be Handed EU Climate And Energy Portfolio In Draft Juncker Commission Line-Up
The UK could miss out on its desired economics portfolio in Jean-Claude’s Juncker’s new European Commission, instead being handed responsibility for the EU’s energy and climate change policies. Juncker will rebuff Prime Minster David Cameron, who has lobbied hard for Jonathan Hill to be given an economics job, according to a draft European Commission line up, seen by EurActiv. The decision, if ultimately confirmed, could push the UK closer to leaving the EU.

Even Longer Pause For Thought
Since the turn of the century, there has been little increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s surface, new research claims. Previous studies claimed this hiatus has lasted for 15 years, but new research believes the temperature has remained almost constant since 1995. Professor Ross McKitrick from the University of Guelph in Canada studied land and ocean temperatures since 1850. He compared this to satellite data from 1979 to 2014. By plotting trends in this data, he has concluded that global warming has been on pause for 19 years.
