Judge is a lightweight.
Wow. I was pretty certain that he'd get 10y at least.

Apparently his supporters shouted "Allahu Akbar" from the gallery. Contempt of court?

I can see that getting appealed on the grounds of undue leniency

Agree, it seems faintly ridiculous, but at the same time, is perhaps sufficiently lenient as to prevent appeal? Plus, maybe there's potential, now he's inside, to trump up additional charges, cases and behaviour to top up.

It might be that the judge has handed down a light sentence to kybosh the inevitable appeal.

Is there any statement with reasoning for such lenient sentence?

I doubt he was a very good lawyer though. Also many go through law school and don't really have a grasp after a few years without practising.

Lets give him a sharia law sentence as he has devoted his time to espousing its virtues. So off with his head.

In my experience, that goes equally for some who have practised for many years.

Well, he did describe himself a judge at a sharia court in the UK. Probably also says quite a bit about those too.

Great - he's set to be released soon. rolleyes

"Anjem Choudary, the notorious Islamist hate preacher, will be released from jail next month despite a chilling warning from the justice minister that he remained “genuinely dangerous”.

Choudary, 51, is due to be freed within weeks after serving half of a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence for encouraging Muslims to join Islamic State.

The Government admitted on Tuesday it was powerless to prevent Choudary from being released on licence. Rory Stewart, the prisons minister, said that the preacher was “a deeply pernicious, destabilising influence”."

Shame we don’t seem to have the same set up or powers as Singapore where people who are deemed to be s serious risk to national security / public order etc can be locked up ( IIRC for up to 2 years )- pending trial etc.
