I don't think (or I hope not) that Classic and Grum are trivialising Rape, I think they are trying to say that Burglary can be horrific too and can take ages to get over, if you ever do.

When my sister was at Uni,she had her flat burgled, took her ages to get over it, thoughts like 'What if I was in or came back early' can be hard to shake.

Either way Rapists and Burglars are the scum of the earth.

I try not to let these things bother me, I mean I know it's wrong, I know it's unjust but with all the other stresses in life to I really need to increase my blood pressure by getting thoroughly pissed off about another vague PH thread title.

A burglar went to prison? Now that is remarkable.
Indeed - ignoring the rape sentence - 8 years sound like a good start for a thief (any thief). I fking hate thieves with a passion beyond anything I have yet experienced. s. I hope they all die.

Exactly. I'm pretty surprised it needs explaining.

Obviously rape and burglary are both very serious but, depending on the scale of the crime, one can be more serious than the other. In most cases, my personal preference would be rape.

But you both seem to be trying too hard to prove a point. Someone could nick my push bike and I could have a nervous breakdown and kill myself. It could happen .... but so what? Don't you think that any number of raped women go on to have breakdowns, depression, panic attacks, anxiety and stress issues, breakdowns of relationships and suicide?

Edited to add - I don't have sister, but if my Mum phoned me with bad news, I'd rather she told me she'd been burgled than raped.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

The long term affects of such a crime are horrific and your casual approach to such crimes is bordering on offensive.

Really? You can replace possessions.
Not if they're unique, out of production or very expensive. I'd rather have a sore arse and a few months of mental discomfort, assuming it would take me that long to get over it.
You wouldn't get over a massive internal tear if they put a fist into you or were massively proportioned. Do you think they do it gently with lube? It's not a gentle crime. Most property is insured or otherwise replaceable. Having a colostomy bag for life doesn't appeal. That doesn't even cover the mental scarring, or the emotional trauma. Foolish comment you made, you'd have no control over what they did to you, you may be able to take a small one, but what you going to do when they go a bit mental on you?

Of course they do, and I can understand why some people would prefer burglary, but the point made in response to the OP is that rape is not always worse. We still don't know the circumstances of the burglary mentioned in the OP, anyway.

Of course I know what I'm talking about, it just seems that my personal preferences are 'wrong'. My sincerest apologies to anyone who is bordering on being offended by my likely preference of rape.

CMN you are a year above my eldest daughter in school; think about it, if I received a call from the Police to go and retrieve my daughter from the station, in which scenario do you think it would be easier to comfort her? The one where she has been punched in the face to nick her phone or even a valuable (probably insured) family heirloom or the one where she's had a knife put to her throat and then.....?

I know there could be a knife in the robbery scenario, but surely you get my point?

I can't even believe there is a debate that either one is preferable to the other.

To trivialise either crime by saying one is worse is completely offensive. Both are invasive, both are potentially fatal incidents, both will make someone feel unsafe in your normal environment and both will have detrimental effects on mental health.

FFS try and have some compassion for people that have been through either of these.

Threads like this make me despair.

I don't much like your suggestion that I consider rape to be a platform for humour.

I agree with that entirely, but you've described a robbery and not a burglary.

As sad as it is she will get over it, in time hopefully. The robbery might of been for somebodies life savings that they will never recover from or perhaps an elderly person and the stress kills them. Not the same really is it?
I don't think I've read anything more drivelous and offensive on piston heads before, ever.

Rape is a horrible crime. Even in its "mildest" form, when raped by someone you know with no other threats of violence, no knife to the throat etc. Just a dreadful thing to happen, and potentially life changing.

Anyone who seriously suggests it's preferable to losing some material possessions should not be allowed on the internet without adult supervision. Imho.
