And Serco..... Bloomin public sector being inefficient and getting things wrong........oh no, it's private sector.... carry on then.
.....so who has been approving their invoices all this time?I very much doubt that they would have got away with it with many private sector operations. If indeed they were up to anything, which they are denying at the moment.

Not to mention those shareholders in the public sector that have a direct interest in the company(s) Edited by Westy Pre-Lit on Thursday 11th July 18:52

Which is worse - the public sector running things or the public sector paying the private sector to run things?
Its is indeed a moot point Eric and a point well made by you. When public services are badly managed by self serving apparatchiks there are dreadful and frequently unlawful, indeed, criminal wastes of the taxpayers hard earned money, with zero benefits arriving with the intended recipients.I fully expect a lot of hot air from the public accounts committee and no effective action to be taken against the senior figures within G4S who will have masterminded this disgrace personally earning massively from it in G4S. As we have seen in the NHS debacle at Stafford and latterly at the BBC these blatantly criminal actions are so protected by the ridiculous bureaucracy within these operations that there is no effective method of control from criminal personal gains being made by the million and even worse from unlawful killings in the NHS.
Unless our politicians find a way of permanently preventing such abuses public service will become the wealthy and lucrative sinecures for a few miscreants and a debased and despised occupation widely regarded as simply rich men feathering their own nests. With examples like this is clear that what this disgrace has become. Arguably with this and the BBC disgrace that situation is already upon us in the UK.

I have said it before on other threads Sreffan and I will say it again here, unless and until we ressurect the concept of the Crown suppliers and make ONE body responsible for Government procurement it will never end.
Samuel Pepys had it right!!
It was a dark day for the Taxpayer when Maggie binned them!
How very dare you insult the name of Godess Thatcher!Samuel Pepys had it right!!

Ad the public centre responsible for paying the bills is responsible for it. Another case of not keeping tabs on where the taxpayers money is going.
Again, if anything was going on.
Just watching Newsnight. Is it always this annoying?
Anyway...privatisation of these services is really pretty poor. Just from a human nature perspective. No oversight of the system is a massive problem. A lack of oversight encourages poor behaviour. We see that everywhere. It's almost like the government wanted these services pushed off somewhere they couldn't be watched. But they wouldn't do that? would they?

Ministry of Justice knew about this in 2008 apparently but civil servants failed to do anything about it. Likely to be disciplined.
The problem is that the whole point of these privatisations is to ostensibly reduce government costs. By putting the costs into the private sector, that should allow the relevant government department or agency to be reduced in size or even abolished.
Therefore, there may not be an adequate number of government employees available to oversee the private sectors management of the service.
