There's some seriously arrogant people in football, and this is represented in this thread.

It's a World Cup, the clue is in the name.

Nothing wrong with visiting lesser football nations. How arrogant to think that the World Cup should just be held for the convenience of Europeans.

As to holding it in November, so what? If you value club football more than your country, you're not going to win anyway.
I hope this requires a parrot because I’m sure someone can’t be that daft.

Indeed; I'm not a huge fan of the game (haven't watch the world cup in about 16 years), even I understand the normal timing of the world cup .... and why clubs are up in arms over potential rescheduling.

Not just Europeans, South Africa hosted a great WC as did Brazil.

As you say iit's a 'World Cup' and most of the worlds footie fans would prefer if it was not held in Qatar.

What's daft?

Why should a small country not host a World Cup?

So we will have to see a suspension to the top leagues around the world, for Nov/Dec, but will the lower leagues still be allowed to continue their league games or will they have to stop for 2months also?

You've missed the point spectacularly here. No one has said that the World Cup shouldn't go to smaller nations, just not a particular sort.

Those for who staging the World Cup means either half the world has to alter its football calendar to adapt or otherwise play in 110 degree heat!!

Who has said that a small country should not hold the WC? That's not the point.

Where shall we start:

Qatar have never qualified for a World Cup and probably never will (excluding the automatic)
Qatar has a population of 2 million with most of them expats, 3.5 million people attended matches in Brazil.
The entire atmosphere of the WC (fan parks etc.) must change to cope with the location

Just off the top of my head, anyone else care to add any others? No problem with small counties hosting, though generally they share the WC (2002 Japan / South Korea WC) but I do have an issue with corruption , a general lack of any footballing history and death toll in the 1000’s for the construction workers.

To spell it out for you oyster, the world cup has been award to a country;
- with a 'questionable' human rights record
- which has a climate incompatible with sports such as football
- which has no football culture, and barely a domestic league
- by an organisation that is so corrupt it won't publish it's own corruption report.
- which has laws that are incompatible with the rest of the world, whom will be expected to attend.
- that had to change its bid completely after it won it, effectively null-and-voiding the bidding process, opening FIFA up to legal challenges from the bidders that failed.
- which failed to co-operate with the FIFA corruption report led by Michael Garcia.

Dont forget the obvious policing of the event that will be required, there simply isnt the skillset or number of bodies here to police a couple of million fans, with a large number pissed and being fighty, someones going to get murdered by the police when it kicks off and guns start being fired.

On top of that the football games they've hosted have been dangerously managed, with fans being boxed in small areas and held back by armed police after games for no reason and out of fear the stadium was going to be empty the gates were opened to all hours before the event then those with tickets who turned up to the asian games final an hour before kickoff were told to go home as the stadium was full.

...yeah its gonna be great!

I have a friend who follows England all over the World and has done for many many years..
His words on Qatar winning the bid were:

I'm stopping following England for this one

IMHO North Korea would have been better than Qatar.

oh yeah, alcohol is NOT a problem..if you dont mind paying 8 quid a pint, unless you get in for happy hour in a hotel in which case its 6 quid.

As far as alcohol goes Qatar is filled with establishments within hotels. Bars, clubs, restaurants, you name it. The only thing you cant get here is pork, (unless you go to the pork & alcohol shop).

Same for me, along with Russia. Didn't renew mine when those two WC were announced. Loved every minute of the time I did follow them though

Agree with you on this but Brazil, South Africa and Russia aren't exactly shining lights either.

So play it in their winter.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Even Brazil had no football culture once.

Agree.

Any laws in particular come to mind?

Can't disagree with that.

Mr Oyster

Would you find anything odd about the Olympic Winter Games being awarded to Haiti?

Just to clarify, I don't think anyone has a huge issue with Qatar hosting it per se, more that the bidding process was utterly flawed and potentially corrupt
