It's hosts v holders that has allegedly been rigged to avoid each other until the final (since 1974).
I thought that was part of the seeding process. In many cases, the host country would be a normally seeded country anyway - although Qatar obviously won't be.

Qatar paid American and Australian academics, journalists and others thousands to talk down their respective World Cup bids.

The Qatar World Cup bid team allegedly broke Fifa rules by running a secret "black-ops" campaign to sabotage rivals competing for the 2022 tournament. The team used former CIA agents and a PR agency to spread fake propaganda about the US and Australia, its two main competitors, according to documents leaked to The Sunday Times.

article said:
According to the newspaper, the alleged smear campaign included paying a professor $9,000 (£6,900) to write a damning report on the economic cost of a World Cup in the US, recruiting journalists and bloggers to promote negative stories in American, Australian and international media, and organising grassroots protests at rugby matches in Australia.

The leaked documents also revealed that a group of American PE teachers had been recruited to ask congressmen to oppose a World Cup on the grounds the money would be better spent on high school sports, the paper claimed.

Just on the thread title, Blatter admits Qatar WC error, to be fair to the old crook, maybe it's time to admit that we were all wrong about Russia and he was right. They put on a fantastic WC, maybe the best ever, as he said they would. No trouble, no racism, so much so that there was no need for segregation in the stadia.

Just amazing.

I too would admit I was wrong however there are still suspicions around it like the deleted computer HDD's and what Putin said to the ultras. One way ticket to Siberia spring to mind. What will be more interesting is what happens next time a team play in Russia.

All that being said, moving Qatar is still a daft idea!

Just having a quick glance at the weather forecast, it's routinely in the mid to high 40's and has in the past gone I'm to the 50's, that alone should be enough to prevent it being hosted.
The same issue may effect Tokyo in 2020, these committees should use some common sense at the planning stage.

So Blatter foresaw that would happen and we all missed it? However you dress it up, the WC was brilliant, as he said it would be, whilst we all said it would be marred by racism and violence.

Not in December it isn't.

I have been a few times at that time of year. Very pleasant at 70s/low 80s. Some issues with dust storms.

However it's a monumentally stupid idea to hold the tournament there. North Korea would be a better choice - at least they have some world cup history as well.

Completely slipped my mind they are doing this at Christmas time, it's even more silly imo people associate the football world cup with summertime.

Not sure what that time of year will do for viewer attendance.

It’s always in winter for half the planet biggrin

As an aside, I’m hoping us Scots can use the opportunity to begin playing through the summer months instead of terrible conditions in winter.

Presumably Budweiser won't be allowed to sponsor this World Cup if it is held in Qatar?
