"Saudi Arabia has invested in Pakistani nuclear weapons projects, and believes it could obtain atomic bombs at will, a variety of sources have told BBC Newsnight.

While the kingdom's quest has often been set in the context of countering Iran's atomic programme, it is now possible that the Saudis might be able to deploy such devices more quickly than the Islamic republic.

Earlier this year, a senior Nato decision maker told me that he had seen intelligence reporting that nuclear weapons made in Pakistan on behalf of Saudi Arabia are now sitting ready for delivery.

Last month Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israeli military intelligence, told a conference in Sweden that if Iran got the bomb, "the Saudis will not wait one month. They already paid for the bomb, they will go to Pakistan and bring what they need to bring."

This will test Saudi/US relations, time for everyone to give up nuclear? It is not as if the big boys don't have enough in conventional weaponry.

I was too long in working out my post wink

Keep a separate thread? or just one with the Sunni & Shias in it - that will create an explosion.

Possibly a poor choice of words. Or maybe a very good one.

This was rumoured back in 1997. From what I understand KSA provided a big chunk of the funds needed for AQ Khan's research on the basis that, if KSA ever needed the finished article. the Pakistani military would provide.

Newsnight are acting as if this is something new. It's been common knowledge for years that the Saudis funded the Pakistan nuclear programme and they didn't do it out of charity.

This was a report on the very same subject from 2007:

http://www.khouse.org/enews_article/2007/1230/

And given that AQ Khan sold nuclear secrets to North Korea, Iran and Libya it would not be much of a stretch for him to break the rules with the Hause of Saud.

I think it's a result of (a) being the geographical centre of the Islamic world and (b) all the petrodollars pumped into it over the last 50 years. Saudis have a unique brand of arrogance and seem to be despised by most muslims who have had the misfortune to travel to that country. Nuking it won't do any good (apart from increasing petrol prices). What might be helpful is the West placing pressure and creating some sort of regime change.

As long as you do what the USA wants you to, it doesn't matter how corrupt and repressive your regime is.

The second you decide to tell the USA to GTFO all of a sudden you are expected to comply with unwritten international "principles" and "obligations" and stuff.....

Good idea Mermaid, but I believe un-doable sadly. If only one cheated and everyone else didn't, instant problem.

Seeing as the US will soon be energy independent, I say leave them to their own repressive craziness. Let the Chinese buy their oil and deal with the disease that is the ME.

Given the recent terrorist actions by the Uighurs, that's not working out too well for them.

The Muslim world needs to get the schism between Sunni and Shia sorted somehow. And sadly I don't think it can be done by talking.

We need the missionaries to convert both. Or a big fight between the two. smile

We could forge a lost scroll that shows the two factions were actually meant as one....we'll call it Shunnism. Get the guy with the longest beard to proclaim it the word and Nobel Peace prizes all around. smile
