IIRC They can't/don't landfill mattresses anymore.

I know can't shred them for Biomass either as the springs cause mayhem with the shredders.

They have to taken apart by hand - cut open and then they cut the springs out.

I took a mattress to the local council tip last week, and it went straight into the standard landfill container.

It may go to an incinerator and not landfill.

There are no issues with mattresses going to landfill. People have been trying to move them from disposal to recovery for years but the costs are so borderline that the recycling element (the metal) is critical. While metal prices are as depressed as they are present, it's cheaper to landfill them.

I can't help thinking that, through lax regulation of these sites, they are causing more environmental harm than just sticking the stuff into landfill frown

At the moment, the weight of the law seems to be directed toward prosecution after the case, rather than pursuing safe and sustainable practices: http://www.mrw.co.uk/news/jailed-waste-operator-ha...

It's a st business at the moment, a lot of it being run by low-lifes and thugs: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2381974/Re...

Saw the smoke from this one on my way to Grantham station this morning. Looked fairly impressive and I figured it was some kind of 'waste' fire.

Was just going to pop up a link to that.

That company aren't doing too well as they had a fire another site in 2008 (if it is the same company), and someone ended up in a shredder a few years ago:

Frankly, this is a ridiculous state of affairs. Unscrupulous firms are making a mockery of the law and recycling policy.

Good spot... That is more than a little coincidental!
