The plant is right next to Landor Street Junction, I drove my freight train past it last night, quite a sight it was too. The smoke drifted a fair old distance, as I passed under the M6 at Castle Brom I could barely see the signals ahead.

Fire crews are fighting a blaze at a scrap yard in South Ashford, involving tyres and several vehicles.
Tyres and other materials have gone up in smoke at the fire in Ellingham Way.

Tyres and other materials which are costly to recycle but you can charge a lot to collect have gone up in smoke and so no longer need recycling...

Although it's quite monolithic, I like it - at least they tried! In Cambridgeshire they just built a big shed. Which didn't work for about a year. That place in Leeds has a slight whiff of Bond baddie's lair about it.
Cambridgeshire? Do you mean the MBT in Waterbeach? If so,it's a completely different technology (nothing gets burned!) so the architectural requirements of the building are bound to be quite substantially different.

Looks like there's just no money in it.

It's a shame as the thought of landfill for materials that can be recycled is inherently wrong. But what's the solution if it's too expensive to do? On the other hand I don't want big subsidies to be given from govt to private companies to do so. Don't know what the solution is really.

Even partial recycling of easily recoverable materials is costly, the viability fluctuates along with the cost of the raw materials produced on the global raw materials market. A possible answer is whole life costing; oblige manufacturers to include the cost of recycling into the price, packaging included. Imported goods have a tariff applied to add the cost of disposal. This would encourage the use of more easily recyclable materials and design for ease of disassembly or refurbishment. The biggest problem is that it would increase the amount of money in recycling and likely increase the amount of corruption and arson.

That doesn't,t look too much different to Port Talbot on any other night TBF. That view you get when you round the corner on the M4.

Ahh so that's what it is.

I quite like it, better than an anonymous steel shed.

The goal of the recycling is re-use, recycling and finally energy recovery.

Why waste time with the first two and go straight for energy recovery i.e.pass GO and collect £200.

All that jazz

I work directly opposite it and it fking stinks. All the straggly turf they've bolted to the sides of it now looks utter st too. It's an eyesore and needs to go. What happened to dumping all our crap in Peckfield village anyway?
