Due to retire next year anyway... Such a sacrifice he made, retiring a year early and had a good excuse to do so.One wonders, had the banking bit not imploded maybe he could have continued his stellar political rise and become an MP, maybe even the leader...
...except you'd not get near a top job in the UK parliament/cabinet seat without detailed and rigorous experience in that speciality...no, wait, I see the problem...

And what happened at the weekend to the Chief Executive of the Co-Operative? Brickbats? The sack? Sanction and censure from the Regulator? Nope, course not. Peter Marks was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2013 New Year Honours, for services to the retail trade... it's quite beyond belief!
http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&f=205&t=1166014&i=2340&mid=&nmt=Mr Wardle said the "time is right for real change" in the company's operations and governance. According to the BBC, "(Wardle) will be replaced by Ursula Lidbetter, who is the Co-op Group's deputy chairwoman and chief executive of the Lincolnshire Co-operative Society.
Getting some woman in from Lincolnshire to run an international business is a "real change" I suppose. Still, getting in a woman from Lincolnshire worked for the Tories with Thatcher, so why not give it a go. What's the worst that can happen...
Also
How the hell did this crystal methodist get to that position in the company anyway? The only thing I can think of it's because of his connections with his leftie friends in the Labour party. I guess the hope was his incompetence would be hidden by hard-working staff lower down the scale.
Hold on a moment isn't this reality following art ?
He surely is the baby eating Bishop of Bath and Wells?
He described himself as a "colossal Pervert " didn't he ?
From The Bank of the Black Monks Of St. Herod ......
"Nice to hear the church speaking out on social issues!"

'Have you ever considered a career in the church?'
When Flowers and Ford, the Mayor of Toronto were on the BBC News homepage lastnight I thought they looked slightly similar.

Bugger just noticed this
Will ask the Mods to close the thread I just opened
My comment fron that however.
During the banking crisis, we saw on here those lining up to give the bankers a kicking.
Those same individuals banged on about "ethical banking" whilst extolling the virtues of operations like the coop smile
So is this what they meant by an ethical bank?
I think the "ethical bank" thing was more about where the Co-op invest, i.e. not in armaments companies or tobacco firms, rather than the drug and sex habits of the board. Will ask the Mods to close the thread I just opened

Yes that is the basis of their business ethics. Massive damage has been inflicted upon the Co-op, another absolutely fine established name is now being dragged through the mud, thanks to gross incompetency of the over-hyped and over-paid idiots.
I was listening to R4 on the drive home last night and I think the issue that stands out - the only point in which you are perhaps incorrect - is the hype. It took the investigating panel minutes to establish that flowers had absolutely no relevant experience or qualification for the role. This wasn't even hype, this was simply utter, mindless cronyism and incompetance.

Did you hear in those secret tapes made last week that Flowers referred to the assiduous Andrew Tyrie MP (Chairman of the Treasury Select Committee) as a "Tory "?
Nice choice of words even for a bank chairman, never mind a Methodist minister and trustee of a major charity. How in the name of Jesus H Christ off his tits on ketamine whilst cruising on Grindr did this muppet ever get into such a position of power.
As someone with investments with Co Op bank one has to wonder what damage is being done to them? Drugs, hookers and other misdemeanour's aside one has to question the competency of an organisation that offers a CEO role to a man with no financial background during a period that the organisation is merging with another (nationwide), a seriously complicated task at the best of times. The investments have massively underperformed in recent years and it is now apparent that the bank was being mismanaged. As another point I heard today that they have massively bankrolled the Liebour party and offered large overdraft facilities to several of it's MP's - another example of chronic poor judgement!
Peston has just been on PM with Eddie Mair discussing this. It was as amusing as the Now Show or News Quiz.
Seems as the core values of the Co-op have been well and truly trashed that the hedge funds that have bailed out the Co-op may withdraw or renegotiate and nail the Co-op to the floor on their rate of return.
Dennis Mac Shane tweeted that history shows that there's always been a change of government after the Olympics? The chances of that happening next time could be reduced due to the relationship between the Co-op and the Labour party.

Have to wonder if there are grounds for a complaint - I can see the value of investments plummeting due to the sheer incompetence of the FSA in rubber stamping the guys appointment. Clearly he was totally out of his depth and sadly investors and shareholders are going to get battered off the back of all of this. AgreedThe Coke and rent boys scandal just drew attention to the fact that the Co Op appointed such a man to run their bank. Seemingly purely on the basis of his political connections.

Or it helps the Tories abandon the Lib/Dems and win a working majority. Of course Mr MacShane is also in trouble, again.

Personally, and like millions of other people perhaps, I truly believed the Co-operative Society to be one of the last major businesses to be upholding the ethics and morals of yesteryear. Sadly it seems my judgement has been wayward.
We are all losers regarding this latest scandal IMO, whether or not any individuals business has been conducted with the business.
