Grow up. What I actually said in context was;

I'm not defending smacking because it evidently means something completely different to different people, from the occasional tap on the hand to being thrashed daily.

I'd vote against all those that say it should be banned
I do agree with this despite the tone of my post above. If the government is going to interfere with parenting it should be encouraging flexible working, modernising maternity services/advice, etc.

It's too easy to ban smacking, as if that'll solve anything. "Oh I'm not allowed to smack my child any more? Well, I better read some peer-reviewed studies about alternative parenting techniques and apply them to my parenting style, then" - will say nobody, ever.
I don't think there's anything sacred about the parent/offspring relationship that should stop the Govt interfering. In fact, it already does so this issue would just be about altering the rules that are already there.
I think that's entirely evident in your posts. In fact you could re-write the thread with that statement. People who think the government should be more involved in bringing up their child vs people who think the government should be less involved.

I'm reminded of another thread where people thought it was OK to lock apprentices in cages and smear various creams on their genitalia as a form of performance management.....

Except that seems to be exactly how the higher mammals 'teach' their cubs. Perhaps there is an inbuilt 'trust' between child and mother, induced by evolution over ,many generations. Either you believe in evolution or you dont, if you do then look at if from a games theory perspective.
Ffs
Chimps kill each others kids, bonobos shag and wk one another left right n centre, all this plus flinging poo
Games theory. ..
so what? The issue is how the child reacts to training from the mother.

Don't count me in that. I don't think the government should ban smacking, because there are much bigger fish to fry when it comes to parenting and I don't want them making out that they've made a difference when it'll have no real impact on child welfare.

I do think the government should be more involved in bringing up children. Flexible working, shorter work weeks, incentives for breastfeeding, more maternity options, mandatory vaccinations and more vaccinations (lack of chicken pox vaccine in NHS is a joke).

Restrict child benefits, child-friendly council houses, etc only to parents who attend weekly parenting courses... THEN if they ban smacking at least they can say the parents should know better.

But if you take smacking away from some of the chavvy proponents who have nothing better in their parenting arsenal, then what? Just let all those millions of children run wild? Or will they put them all in care?

They should be widely available to everyone to be honest. I don't think I had any interaction ever with any child in between being one and having one.

Indeed. Reading NP&E often seems like a fleeting insight into some Kafkian parallel universe.

Ah, physical restraint... Exerting your physical prowess once again.
What are you on?

You DON'T think grabbing hold of your child is the right way to stop them running into the road/putting their hand in the fire, but you DO think that a smack will stop them doing both of those things?
Is life really that black and white to you? Smacking is one of the tools available to parents, it's effective when necessary but by no means the only tool.

What is an appropriate punishment for smacking? Take the child away and put them in care? Because that always ends well...

You know you could start your own thread to whine about NP&E instead of doing it on every other thread.

Given he *never posts outside NP&E* and has thousands of posts here he must be a part of what he's complaining about.
