Tell me about it. If someone I knew was in hospital with brain trauma and every time I said anything hopeful someone told me there's no hope, they're a vegetable or that John Elway had thrown their brain against the wall, I'd have thumped someone by now (not John Elway)

If the update is true I'd take that to be a massive step forwards - to now be in a wheelchair compus mentius but not able to communicate yet.

Were all wishing MS the best and his family.

Michael Schumacher able to recognise his wife and children, says friend
Former Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is able to recognise his wife and two children, a year after he sustained severe head injuries in a skiing accident, a friend has said.

Philippe Streiff, also a former Formula One driver, suggested in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper on Sundaythat Schumacher might eventually walk again with the help of crutches. It was the most optimistic assessment since a doctor who had treated the multiple world champion in hospital in Grenoble told the media two months ago that he had made “some progress”.

Streiff said the 45-year-old was improving and was conscious. “But he hasn’t yet recovered the power of speech, and communicates with his eyes. Nevertheless he is beginning to recognise his family, his wife and his children, but has big memory problems,” he said.

Hard to believe that it'll be one year ago tomorrow that this incident took place, hope Michael continues to make progress throughout 2015 and beyond.

There is no news. A medically unqualified friend has suggested Michael is "beginning" to recognise his family!

I should have said 'iF' I never expect him to lead any sort of normal life again but you do sometimes get taken in by stories and hope that's not the case.

Yeah sure, but I'm afraid that in this instance the article probably means absolutely nothing.

Michael Schumacher faces a "long fight" on the road to full recovery, his manager has said, one year after the F1 champion suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident.

"It's going to be a long time," Sabine Kehm was quoted as saying.

Her comments came after a former racing driver said Schumacher was beginning to communicate with his eyes.

The claim, made by Phillipe Streiff, was dismissed by Ms Kehm and Schumacher's doctor.

Speaking to Le Parisien newspaper, Mr Streiff said he understood that Schumacher was now recognising his close family and communicating with them using his eyes.

The retired French F1 driver said he had obtained his information after being in contact with Schumacher's wife and the surgeon who is treating him.

But Professor Gerard Saillant, the surgeon, denied giving any information to Mr Streiff.

"For a year, I have never had any contact, verbal, written or physical with Phillipe Streiff," he said via a spokesman, according to the AFP news agency.

Meanwhile Sabine Kehm said Mr Streiff was not a close friend of Schumacher and had not been in contact with either her or Mr Saillant.

Schumacher, a seven-time F1 champion, suffered his head injury while skiing near the French resort of Meribel on 29 December last year.

After spending nine months being treated in French and Swiss hospitals he was transferred in September to his family home on the shores of Lake Geneva.

The German driver, who won a record 91 F1 races, had retired from the sport in 2012 after an attempted comeback ended in disappointment.

Until an official spokesperson, his wife or manager makes an announcement then I'm afraid you can't believe any of these press reports, no matter who the information has originally come from, it is all speculation and guesswork.

I'm afraid that we won't hear anything official for years, probably decades and it will be something along the lines of him catching an infection, and passing away.

So his manager's latest statement says absolutely nothing, except that other's claims are fiction
You can't help thinking that if there was some good news the family would want to release it

True - but I think Schumacher's fans would love to know how he really is.

I sit on the fence between wanting to know and thinking some accurate news would now be very welcome, and on the other hand thinking it's none of my damned business and it's a private matter.

Is it intrusive for his millions of fans to want to know how he is? I'm not sure.

If the family wants to limit misinformation then it is in their own hands. By saying nothing they encourage speculation.

I can accept that they want to be left alone but that ain't going to happen without them doing something positive. MS has used PR before his accident and I wonder why these professionals are not used now.

I've been involved in a number of cases where there was a lot, some might say excessive, press interest and the tool that was used to control it was information. Even a pronouncement of 'no change' is an update. The one essential here is to be honest.

I have no connections with MS apart from being a fan of the sport, but I'd read any updates on his condition. It is not morbid, just the reverse in fact. I do not, in any way, condone intrusive reporters but if Strieff has really said what he is reported to have said then the suspicion is that he has a source. The doctor's statement does nothing to challenge this.

MS was not a private person. His wife and family are. So one can understand them not wanting to be bothered. However, he earned much of his money from his fanbase (which doesn't include me by the way) and cutting them off seems a bit harsh when someone else can do all the work.

That said, I'm not particularly bothered by the lack of information.

We can moan about the intrusive press, and those who watch the outlets, or but the papers, for encouraging it but it is like the common cold. It's there and there's no real way of stopping it. All you can do is create coping mechanisms.

Poor Michael
If he is locked in, there would have been a sign by now.

It's such a tragedy when this kind of trauma leads to this out come
It's no kind of life for him, or his family.
And so massively depressing for them, seeing him this way.

Millions spent prolonging his life, which has zero quality
A nightmare for everyone
No progress, and no moving on
So sad.

There's a part of me that thinks (OK hopes) that his Consultant has said something loose but accurate to someone, then been slapped by the family and forced to retract.

There is only way his family can manage this and that is the way they are doing so.

Think about it - there can only be one source of info and that must be through his manager. As soon as people are given an inch of rope they will be galloping off to the press, maybe adding a bit more then the press will be dressing it up and adding a headline.

That will not only put pressure on the medical staff and invite the parasitic hacks to start prying at the clinics and hospitals, it will also cause further stress and anxiety to the family.

It has to be a blanket ban and any speculation accurate or not has to be stamped out quickly.
