There are mobile phone apps that log that sort of thing for you using GPS. The most I've done is about 43 mph, but it seems about twice that with no car around you.

I think he was going through a short section between 2 pistes, so he was unlikely to be going that fast. If you're skiing through virgin snow you can sometimes hit a hollow that throws you without warning. I wiped out that way once. Seems he hit a rock with his head though, which is desperately unlucky.
Second all this. I was timed at Les Arcs at 97kph/(approx. 60mph) and I was st scared, far more so than doing 150mph on a bike.

Mrs Vizsla had an incident in Meribel with an unexpected hollow as you describe, shot right out of her bindings, helicopter through the air and landed on her shoulder, well smashed, skidoo needed to get her to the clinic etc. Pure luck that it was not so much worse, if you give it some go then skiing is seriously dangerous, no question. I came across the debris of a fatal after a jack-the-lad idiot had crashed into a totally blameless woman and it was not pleasant. Take care powder hounds (I'm too old and decrepit now!)

Ironic, he spent his life travelling at 200mph.

Same with Mike Hailwood....killed on the way to the chip shop.

You never know what's round the corner..................

Id take the apps with a pinch of salt though as 3 of us had the same app running and all went down the same run and the same time and nobody pulled ahead of the other etc yet one guy managed something like 13mph more than me/the other guy.

What the apps are doing are making tts chase high speed figures so they can brag about it later on in the evening.

All sports are dangerous - skiing can be as safe as anything BUT you need to be mindful of your abilities others around you and then the unknowns.

Personally I don't go that fast on the slopes take my time enjoy it - must say I do have a worry when the kids are get if old enough to go fast on the slopes/out of control and I cannot keep up but then have to go straight to catch them. ..

The terminally ill Formula 1 hero is making progress in recovery, as COLORFUL exclusively learned from his closest environment!

It seems like a Christmas miracle! After his serious skiing accident in December 2013. Michael Schumacher will make steps to recovery. COLORFUL spoke exclusively with a confidant of the Formula 1 hero.

Michael Schumacher (46) crashed two years ago while skiing with his head on a rock, 159 days he lay in an artificial coma. Since September 2014 cares in his villa on Lake Geneva, a top team of doctors and therapists around him. But now there is a new ray of hope. More than that, it's a Christmas miracle!

How COLORFUL has learned exclusively, the sports hero is making progress in recovery. "Michael is very thin. But he can again run a little help of his therapist. He manages to walk a few steps. Even his arm he can raise, "says a confidant of the magazine.

Amazing that he's only 46. I was a snotty nosed 16 year old when he won his first WDC. Not in the most glorious way but I remember thinking that he was massively talented and a sort of role model even then in his combination of being as fast as anyone when he needed to be, as clever as anyone on the grid, and still working as hard as any driver out there. Seems like he should be much older.

Thats what gets me - I know that stories are fabricated all over the place (daily mail is a good example), but what possible gain is there in writing this one?

Oh, wait .... its all about getting more people reading their pages, advertising revenue, etc. etc. Tossers.

I don't really understand why his family are keeping his condition secret. What difference would it make to them whether the world knew or not? Are they expecting us all to forget all about him?
In part it's probably because of BS stories like the one posted today - give the media a bit of information, either positive or negative, and they'll turn it into something altogether different. Then the family get bombarded with messages from their friends, acquaintances and well-wishers saying "great to hear Michael is on the road to recovery" or "sorry to hear about Michael" - that would be an emotional roller-coaster for his wife and kids. What they are dealing with is not unlike a bereavement imo and keeping their emotions in check and getting on with their lives is already difficult enough without the media printing pish about the whole situation.

I think there's a greater likelihood of BS being printed if there's nothing official released from time to time. Now, personally, I don't feel that MS's family owe me anything. I'd love to hear positive news but am happy enough to just let it lie and respect the family's privacy. If I never see another statement made about MS by someone whose qualified to make one then that's fine by me. But, there are many out there who still think MS's life is public property and, as such, create a demand for BS where no credible information is forthcoming, therefore, BS continues to be published.

Two years ago today. Amazing how time has left him stranded there.

Two years and I've no idea on his condition, and don't believe anything that the media reports.

Two years since a simple error whilst skiing. A great talent snatched away, a great man taken and put into purgatory.

The greatest all round F1 talent. And I say that with no disrespect to Ayrton Senna.

Bianchi's family on the other hand went out of their way to keep the media updated and I respect them for that.

TBH, it wouldn't surprise me if Schumacher were to die from his injuries, his family would have a private burial before even telling the press.
If the family choose privacy, the media should respect it. Can't argue about Bianchi's family, their choice.

If your spouse was hurt, (God forbid), would you keep posting updates on FB for example.

Time to just raise a glass to his health, good, bad or indifferent. He gave so much entertainment so publicly for so long, maybe this episode should be private - whether right or wrong it's not up to us - which in itself is right. So for all those good times and happy memories, cheers Michael drink

It's not about you and your wants. It's about him and his family and it's up to them to do what they think best.

I can't believe this thread keeps on coming back again. The guy is obviously seriously, severely impacted, there's not likely to ever be any truly positive news or fairy tale ending.

Let him and his family come to terms with it in their own space and time, FFS.
