Could you manage? My mortgage is quite low and i owe nothing. Cars are all sheds, (have quite a few but even total would not be a lot).

So for a 40 hour week it's £280?

Minus tax and NI, no that wouldn't cover my bills.

No. But then my life is arranged around a decent income, and it's hard to unwind that immediately.

Someone earning that amount would be likely to qualify for state help.

Why? I'm interested. How could anyone live on it? Much fuss about it being too high and stifling industry. But could anyone really live on it? Locally even rent for a st 2 up 2 down is more than my mortgage.

How do folk live on such low income? If they could pay the deposit on a mortgage it is far cheaper than rent. Where would they live in the time to save?

Clearly some do, how? I'm regularly taken the pish out of for being a tight wad by my Mrs and step son. I earn i suspect way above average. Own a modest house, (well eventually). I do own quite a few cars / bikes but total probably under £6k, (shed addict).

I think your thread idea is okay.

I think it's your stupid bloody wording and options on the poll causing constination.

If a British individual wants to get off their arse, pay taxes and go out and work full time in this country then in return it is not unreasonable that they be paid enough to be able to rent basic accommodation and cover basic living expenses.

£7 p/h doesn't do that.

Increase the minimum wage and reduce benefits.

When carreauchoper mentioned it being a 'stupid poll' I initially disagreed with it, but after reading your qualifying statement I agree with him?

How do people live on minimum wage? Seriously?

Live a frugal life with parents / in a shared house / in a bedsit / as a lodger? What lifestyle should the least useful of employees be able to afford? What should the entry level standard of living be?

My bad! I believe that is the colloquile?

I just can't imagine trying to live on it.

Not a PH director, i earn quite a decent wage an am comfortable. Just wonder how others survive.

Well with 2 incomes it's pretty easy 2k coming into house one will pay for mortage/all associated bills the other will be for insurance/car stuff/petrol/food and a bit left over for saving money that's how both my parents have lived for all my life. This does involve living in a area where house prices are low im in wales can get a good 4 bed house for under 100k for example.

I used to live on £75 per week when I was an apprentice at 17 and that had to cover learning to drive/ buying tools for work/ later on in the year running a car when I passed. Ive got everything I possible need 4 years later on around £230 per week built my own kit car and run a mx5 which im happy with. Part of my wage goes on paying for food and board and lodge to live at home. Im also currently setting up my own business but stil have plenty left at the end of each month.

Perfectly easy to live on minimum wage although holidays every year and going out for food is out the window I haven't had a holiday for 6 years. Plenty of people live of it and have a decent standard of living.

Minimum house costs are
gas, electric, water council tax, TV licence. I'm very frugal but just those would be most of scroungers charity, (benefit). Internet i would count as essential too, no contact no job. (Should be no porn etc)/

Well without going into too much detail I earn around £1.50 an hour more than that and also usually get a smallish bonus as well. I live in Central Scotland so thankfully I can afford my own place. JUST. £480 in rent, £80 or so in Gas and Leccy, Sky TV and broadband cost me nada, I have a car but it's wholly owned so no finance. Petrol is probably £100 a month or so and Insurance is £42. After all the bills have been paid I'm left with a shade over £200 most months. I live payday to payday. My savings account contains precisely £0.00 and I use a paid for (but authorised) overdraft every month. I couldn't get by without it. Am I entitled to state help? Actually, no. I get my kids at the weekend but they're classed as living with their mother so there's no chance of anything in tax credits. I'm above the threshold for housing benefit and council tax benefit (Or I was 5 years ago when I asked last) and in all honesty some months I can't even pay my council tax and get by. That amount of money is really a pittance. I'm struggling to get by as it is some months. Minimum wage needs to be more than £7 an hour. I can't imagine how a single person could cope on £7 an hour. I'm imagining a flat with 4 bedrooms, each one rented out individually or something and certainly no place to bring up children.

I can't even afford to put money away for a mortgage deposit but even if I did I doubt I'd get one. When I got divorced, well, everything we borrowed was in my name. You can probably guess the rest. I haven't even had a holiday in years.

fk me that sounds like a sob story!

Sounds like a chap doing his best in the face of adversity. Working hard, paying his bills and not expecting anything from anyone.
