Top professional sports stars have lived in tax havens for years. Jersey is popular with golfers. SIR Jackie Stewart spent much of his life in Switzerland. Other great "Brits", many beknighted, have lived abroad to avoid UK taxes in the past (Sean Connery, Michael Caine, David Coulthard etc etc). The list is long.

Mo isn't exactly in a tax haven.
Let's face reality here, almost every single TV and media personality in the UK is partaking in serial avoidance schemes. The media industry and its workers don't pay tax, neither do sporting professionals. I blame the bankers.
I would agree with you. However I do think Tax avoidance is rising in the UK directly with the enormous change there has been in the coming and going of ordinary people internationally to reach the current levels. Using Eric Mc's listing above Sean Connery, Michael Caine, David Coulthard, Sir Jackie Stewart and adding Lewis Hamilton, Jensen Button and indeed Mo Farah etc etc have all massively protected their earnings by offshore tax avoidance. I see nothing wrong with these examples because their avoidance has been achieved lawfully. Many in our country now spend the winters abroad and IMO good luck to them. I see a permanent change coming in UK taxation where using complex structures to effect tax avoidance becomes commonplace in the UK, particularly amongst those who travel widely abroad. This seems a matter of personal choice to me providing the avoidance is declared and legal. The Revenue will not bite the bullet of the Rangers avoidance case. On we go: in volume.
Also, just to add that my personal view is that the 40% rate of old should be a bracket above a level defined by the average UK wage and that above that the rate should systematically fall to 15%. Ergo, people are incentivised to both earn more and declare more thus achieving a higher overall tax take while also increasing the defined 'average' upon which the 40% is levied so reducing the taxation burden at the bottom as more people pay more at the top and more foreign nationals are incentivised to re-locate with full tax declaration.

I very much agree with Donkeyapple's solution.

Due to the way we currently do it, loads of ig earning induviduals and multinationals just offshore everything. If we did a curvy scale, we might get other nationalities doing the reverse and coming here for tax..

If it turns out that there's any truth in it the British media will suddenly start referring to him as Somalian.

Yeah he should be paying full british tax, its atrocious that he gets away with this, but if he does pay UK tax we should be supplying him with all the amenities of a UK resident, health care, teachers for his kids, collecting his bins.

Some of you guys need to get some prospective, the money we pay is for the services that we receive in our lifetime and to support the greater community. Do you really think that people that leave the country should be to continue to pay UK tax? and they would also need to pay tax in their new country of residence for the services they receive?

Some of you need to start thinking like adults and stop letting the spin that the paper put on these sort of stories affect the way in which you think, these stories are spun for one reason only and that's to get hits for their own financial gain, perhaps someone should write a story about that?

On the doping, its rampant within professional sports, ive got the point were im apathetic about it.

Are you aware of the existence of bi-lateral tax treaties? Plus you would really need to know the exact arrangement applicable and also domicile/residency tests before commenting on this in any meaningful manner.

I think morningside was referring to the British media turning on him for living outside the UK. Not pointing out that he does.

BBC news reporting it now. There is NO suggestion he has done anything wrong.

You'll know he is guilty if and when the BBC refer to him as Mohamed.

Yes sorry, I realise and I wasn't disagreeing with your general point. I was simply pointing out that this isn't how the tax system works.

Another 2 world championship gold medals for Mo. There is now a fair bit of distance between Mo and Seb Coe/Daley Thompson when it comes to the 'Britain's greatest athlete' debate. In fact many would argue that he's only one more Olympic gold medal away from being Britain's greatest ever sports-person.

Still 'hero' for me, until proven otherwise.
