And for people who have to go a bit further once you have cycled you will never go back, plus its free and you get fit. Its like a magic wand and people are ignoring it daily to get fat.
For Londoners, cycling is only a "magic wand" if you turn a blind eye to the appalling weather and the high fatality rate.

+ lack of proper cycle parking at offices and the theft rate, and the fact that folding bikes are a pain in the arse on commuter trains

Just jack the RMT you don't agree.

When I first started as a trainee I had loads of union propaganda shoved in my face and was signed up at what felt like gunpoint but at the time I did not know any better, come the first strike after my apprenticeship (trainees immune from industrial action) I could not understand why we were doing it so decided not to, my friends all went on strike even though they did not agree but "I'm in the union innit" attitude kicked in.

After that I dropped the RMT, stopped listening to the militants and progressed further than I'd ever imagined in my career, far further than anyone of the RMT members I left behind.
Good for you.
Do you think you progressed because you weren't in the union or do you think your attitude to work that prevented you wanting to be in the union was what resulted in your promotions?

I was in the ToSSAs for a few years. Went through several reorgs and a move to MFK without hearing a peep from them.

The one guy who is union rep that did make contact with them requesting assistance got moved from a promotion he was about to go into.

I support them in theory but in reality they haven't done much for me. Cancelled my membership a year ago.

I change my attitude to work and started thinking for myself.

Since when did 48 hours + 72 hours become "a fortnight"?

"The first two days of strike action will take place ahead of a May Day event in memory of former RMT leader Bob Crow"

"The event will also be in remembrance of Tony Benn, the politician and campaigner who died several days after Mr Crow."

Even when they are in the ground, they still have influence rolleyes

When it's combined with public holidays, and the chosen times of start/stop at 21:00 effectively breaking things for the whole day before and after as well, because the trains are all in the wrong places. That's when.

I wish they'd strike for a month, then we'll see them not be able to strike any further in order to afford pay the rent.

Was just thinking the same - clearly they can afford to strike quite regularly at the moment!

My dad was in a union (late 70s but not a militant union) but he left when he was promoted out into the management strata. But I can imagine that you will face much greater pressures to stay in a union (and possibly benefits) if you are in the lower echelons of an organisation, even if you don't want to be part of it.
Something like 75% of operational staff are unionised, around 10% non operational (that is, office based).

Everyone on strike today and tomorrow should come in to a p45 on Thursday.

We don't even need to replace them with Romanians, monkeys would do.

If I was a cynic I'd say this was a bit of internal power play byRMT senior apparatchiks jockeying to fill the deceased leader's (RIP) shoes.
