McCain: West’s weak response to Russia could lead to bad things

The weak response of western countries to Russia’s actions in Ukraine could lead to ‘even worse things’, as it is implied by U.S. senator John McCain.

When asked if the current situation can serve as an indication that the western world is not prepared for sacrifices and actual economic sanctions to stop Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, McCain said he has been rather concerned over how weak the response from the west has been so far. He added that it may be due to the fact that the response is not considered to be especially strong against Vladimir Putin...

One wonders why the government in Kiev doesn't pull the election forward and have done with it...

I'm not an expert. But my guess is that they need a lot of votes in their parliament for that to be legal. And they can't agree/their parliament doesn't really exist at the moment.

Because if they do anything, the Russians will call it a sham.

The Ukrainian Government need to hold Legal and Internationally Observed (a friend of mine will be there doing just this) elections on the 25th of May.

Russia needs to do everything it can to prevent this.

Why would anyone in the West want a Ukraine that is potentially hostile to Russia? Independent but subservient would be fine.

Why should the Ukrainians do anything to suit either lot? Let them have their elections.

Because there are more important issues at stake here than a free, independent Ukraine.

The European Parliament is working on a resolution to be voted tomorrow. It will include 4 important points:

]1) The events in Ukraine are caused by Russian 'aggression by rates' with the use of special forces.
2) The European Parliament calls on the EU to immediately introduce economic sanctions of the third grade against Russia. This means that the West should block Russia like it blocked Iran. A weapon embargo should be introduced and the sanctions of the second grade reinforced.
3) Ukraine has the right to defend itself according to art. 51 of the UN charter
4) Sending a mission of the Common Security and Defence Policy, like the EU did in Georgia

Am I missing something here:

Putin warns the West against aiding the civilians in Syria saying its nothing to do with anyone but the Syrian government.

Putin wants to send his troops in to Ukraine due to oppression by the government against civilians.

Talk about double standards, but then I suppose Putin knows we we in the West have no appetite for real confrontation provided he picks his targets wisely.
