what would Sweden do if a Russian submarine was forced to surface?
Stick some surstromming down the hatch and seal it shut?
That would probably be classed as a war crime hehe

The Klimov is a direct copy of the Nene there is no other engine with that precise configuration of double sided compressor except for the Derwent 5 which is a scale of a Nene.

It was only the optimum configuration for an engine for a very brief time.

The design process for the Klimov included a tour through an RR factory with rubber soled shoes to pick the shavings up.
My bold

I've read this before on here, I find it very difficult to believe such a primitive method of collecting metallurgical information would be used/

Far easier to bung an envelope full of cash to someone in the design office?
Reported from the Soviet side.....

If someone did give it up there is a fair chance we'd now know about it via the Mitrokhin archive.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitrokhin_Archive

I used to work in RR turbine systems, the details of metallurgy, design, analysis and manufacturing is split over numerous people you'd have to steal from more than one archive and bribe more than one person to get the specific information to actually make the whole thing.

Large column of Russian tanks (30+ counted) entering Donetsk, Ukraine... Possible build up to a big push.

Be honest, we are no threat to the likes of Russia or China, or nearly any other country in the world . . . .
Quite so.

What strikes me as bizarre about our current policies is that they are no threat to us either (Russia since the late 1980s, Libya under Gaddafi, say, Syria under Assad, Iraq . . . even - arguably - IS), yet we just love Emergency Cabinet Meetings and "doing something".

Bit of positive engagement would be more helpful.

Anyway, good luck with the phantom submarine. I'm off to Moscow next week - I'll take the littl'un to see the bits of Gary Powers' U2 whilst I'm there . . .
Well, having failed to find the alleged submarine, it's fair enough that we have to find something else to feel threatened about . . .

Continuing what he's been doing for the last 6 months, exactly what he thinks is good for him and his buddies. Low and behold, we have NATO issuing a stiffly worded press release stating the fking obvious, so they're sticking to the script as well. Situation normal chaps, we call all relax.

Why on earth would an Islamist be fighting in the Ukraine? The Russian media were calling the Ukrainian "nazis" a while ago, now the heroic volunteers are fighting islamist terrorists, what next? Zombies? Vampires?

You can add the German media to that, as well. And anyone with at least two brain cells to rub together. Apologies for the skyrover-esque post, but sometimes tabloid-style photographs do serve a purpose.

Why is it far right , they are ukranian's fighting for there country which russia has invaded, we support the actions of the french resistance yet they were doing the same as the ukranians defending there country that's been invaded.

Re the sieg heil sub titles, were they really saying that or did it just spice up the story?

A small minority just like the EDL and BMP etc bet the russian media loves to use that type of footage to justify their actions though!

I think US bombers are flying much closer to russian airspace, there are some even stationed in Estonia and you can check on the map how far from Russia that is wink
