Putin knows full well the west in the shape of Europe will do anything but get involved in a war with Russia over Ukraine.
The next issue will be how much aid in the shape of weapons will the US donate.
Putin is sitting back with all the cards stacked in his favour and he knows it .
Would any of the EU leaders concern you if you were Putin ?.
I still think this is going to get really nasty.

Will we ever see Germany turn their attention to building capable armed forces?

Don't think they are able to and not sure if they want to.
Putin is old school he understands strength and lets face it Western Europe is weak in leadership terms and also very fragmented he can sit back and just pick away at the Ukraine.
What I don't know is what he wants other than to create a divide between Russia and the West.
I am sure he would love the old Soviet Union back but even he isn't that deluded.

Facts have been provided, and they do not support your previous statements. So I take your redirection of the topic as a concession, and will continue to do so unless you can provide evidence to the contrary for the two points under discussion.

I still maintain that you were best at polluting threads with tabloid headlines.

Doesn't Ukraine have potentially huge shale gas reserves?

Ukraine has large borders on to the Black Sea, which IIRC contains a lot of oil.

Is it not about preventing European energy security and therefore ensuring a continuing reliance on Russian exports? Is the EU green obsession not the other half of this same coin?

Quite possibly but with Putin I think he has rose tinted glasses when he thinks of the old Soviet Union.

I don't think so. I think he sees the Ukraine and the others as somewhere new for his mafia to operate.

You threw a few vague links to western mercenaries fighting on the front line...

Nowhere have you shown any proof of a western backed coup.

However I'm starting to build a picture... because no matter how many people Russia murders, no matter how much damage and destruction they wreak, no matter how many laws they break and no matter how much evidence is presented to you...

In Scherzkeks world, the West/USA is always in the wrong.

If roles has been reversed and the USA became involved with Mexico, you would be all over them like a rash.

Lets hope that was a chef plant and not a nuke
It was the shelling of a rebel held chemical plant.

Fairly big bang though... Apparently no one was killed which is quite amazing.
You'd have to be a complete loon to hang around a petrochemical works that's being shelled; they go bang often enough without such provocation. Explosions of that size will often produce mushroom clouds depending on the weather conditions, nothing to do with buckets of instant sunshine.

Nowhere near bright enough to be a nuke.

I have seen videos of similar clouds from fuel air bombs, if a shell has hit a pipe or tank containing a fuel source, but doesn't explode due to the lack of oxygen, but spreads out and then finds an ignition source a similar explosion could result.

Looked like a small Nuke tho

And the man on the internets said -

Dr Douglas McGregor, a researcher in Nuclear Physics at the University of Glasgow, told the Huffington Post: "To my mind the videos show a large explosion, which is most likely to be a very large conventional explosion.

"However, from the pictures I could not categorically rule out a small nuclear explosion. The acid test will be to monitor to see if there is any radioactivity in the vicinity when observers gain access to the site."

You might want to brush up on your history. The US did get involved in Mexico. It has regularly been involved in the politics of other Central American countries including supporting some dictators or destabilising others whenever it wanted to.

If that had been a nuke, even a tiny tactical one, we wouldn't be watching that video at all.

It was just a regular rocket hitting something big and flammable.

You'll have to forgive him, he's a certified expert in Russian history, you see. hehe

Anyways, I've mentioned before that the tactics used in Ukraine mimic the destabilization methods the CIA has regularly employed in South America.
