Ukraine is showing the roots of a responsible western style democracy.

Lets contrast that with the kind of democracy the Russian's espouse.

Let's hope this lasts, seems the suspected rowing back by the supporters of new "democratic" Ukraine is now actually happening.

No surprise there. What choice have they got?

What happens if you challenge the official Kremlin version if events?

Meanwhile those cuddly Russian separatists have banned all UN aid agencies from "their territory"

From what I've heard, Putin seems to make much more sense than western leaders WRT Syria.

Totally agree, I think he can sort this mess out far better than the Yanks / UK can.

Would you be happy if the UK committed ground troops to Syria?

Russia aren't (yet), are they? A few physically there maybe, but not doing much other than handing over equipment?

They have deployed combat troops and some have already been killed

The first of those two links don't seem to suggest Russian ground troops are doing much yet. The third seems to be a Ukraine source - interesting choice to say the least!

I wouldn't like to see UK troops there because I have little faith in our leaders, they seem to be undecided about which side we are on, also have made IMO a mess multiple times in recent Middle East/North African adventures.

Putin seems to be unambiguously on Assads side, who I can believe is a nasty piece of work, but to me seems to be the only position to take as it seems to be the only position that can have a plausible aim/outcome that could be achieved in the relatively near term (something our adventures have lacked). AFAIK Russia has a naval base in Syria and supplies Assad with weapons, which re-enforces my belief that Putin isn't about to start on some utopian mission to overthrow Assad and replace him with some kind of western democracy.

ETA: Just searching for 'Assad' for news... and find this:

BBC Article said:
US President Barack Obama has said defeating Islamic State in Syria would only be possible if President Bashar al-Assad stepped down, and that the fight against the group will take time.
I can't say I have much faith in this attitude/approach, it reminds me of our other recent military interventions.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "If this is part of international action against ISIL (IS) and that appalling terrorist death cult outfit, then that is all to the good.

"If, on the other hand, this is action against the Free Syrian Army and in defence of Assad the dictator, then obviously that is a retrograde step, but let's see what happened."

Following Mr Cameron's comments, the Kremlin claimed most of the Free Syrian Army had now joined IS.

^^ slick move ha ha

Well, if anyone is going to fail I'd rather it isn't us anyway.

Well to me it seems like there wasn't / isn't any progress with that the US are doing, maybe Russia will have more success, here's hoping anyway.
