You know how Putiniks like to get a bit provocative with their military aircraft frm time to time?

Well, they get a bit dischuffed when roles are reversed: http://news.yahoo.com/swiss-military-plane-flew-cl...

It was far too close, it's claimed. However, not close enough to see the Swiss markings, and causing Vlad to get all uppity with the French.

Reviving this one for a fairly old story, but it doesn't seem to have been discussed when it was first announced at the beginning of last year; the US Army are bringing M1 tanks back to europe in significant numbers as part of a general expansion of pre-placed equipment for units to man in the event of unpleasantries, what the spams call their European Activity Set, which makes it sound disturbingly like a toybox rather than a brigade's worth of military hardware in a shed. 250~ tanks isn't a huge amount in the scheme of things but it demonstrates some commitment to NATO in the face of Putin's brinkmanship.

Meanwhile, Russian lawmakers have got bigger fish to fry: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/05/russi...

Well, not fish as such, but tigers promoting gay lifestyles, obvs.

Maybe time to start Reforger exercises again...

So, two TU 160s escorted off the patch again today.

Apart from making himself look like a belligerent bell-end that's doing his utmost to trigger an international incident, what the fk does Putin think he's achieving?

Same reason Kim Jong Cake in North Korea does it.

Winding us up. Having a sniff of the ether checking emissions, reaction times. Winding us up again.

Can we not send a fleet of Vulcans an Typhoons on a direct course for Leningrad then await their response time. Fully laiden with ballistic missiles.

Just for sts and giggles

Maybe he is thinking of liberating us from the menace of tyranny, also known as the EU.

Bring in strict visa requirements and examination of papers on our borders for all Russian visitors to the UK and they'll soon stop fking about.

Can you imagine how pissed off his paymasters would get?

I hope the RAF are fashionably late and use a radar from a museum.

It's just blatant brinkmanship, rather than subversive but no less dangerous brinkmanship that the USA is playing perpetually around the world.

Their bombers have been probing our airspace since at least the 60s. I used to read about it when I was a plane mad kid ogling our magnificent Lightning interceptors.
Nothing ever comes of it. A waste of time for all concerned or a training exercise for both sides, take it as you will.

Couldn't we just send up the Battle of Britain flight - can they fly high enough? The photo opportunity would be worth it, I would love to see the photos of a Spitfire with a Bear in the background with headline "RAF sends proportionate response" smile

They were Blackjacks, so they'll fly higher and faster probably even than the new Typhoon.

Better send up 'old' F15s for interception duty then hehe

I'm only guessing. But the Blackjack is pretty damn high performance back from the days of fast high flying bombers and interceptors.

A good old Tornado ADV is probably a better interceptor for the Blackjack 'threat' I'd say because it'd already be up on a CAP hanging around all day long smile

Blackjacks have been recently upgraded I believe? Not a threat that should be taken lightly.

They are just fking with us, same as the Spams are doing with North Korea.
