Blackjacks have been recently upgraded I believe? Not a threat that should be taken lightly.
Most Russian kit has have been actively upgraded so there is a good chance this is the latest and greatest Russia has to offer. No doubt Mach 2 capable at 50,000ft for hours on end? And carries a HUGE thermonuclear or conventional stick.
I'm not really sure it could get much worse for a country having it's airspace probed.

No doubt they're testing stuff like ECM packages and stuff and getting a close look at how the Typhoon radars and IR kit perform?!

A constant game of showing off each others kit and at the same time seeing what it's capable of.

We'll be doing the same back to them. Don't see why you're so uptight about it?

If you don't think we're doing the same to them then you're being quite naive.

Can you substantiate your reply? I'm genuinely interested. A quick online search returns nothing.

All parties are allowed observational overflights as part of international treaty

Sending armed bombers to probe airspace with transponders turned off is different.

This is they type of thing I'm referring to. The UK doesnt have any long-range bomber assets so it does it's spying in a different way. Although the linky above refers to US submarines I've read articles about our Trafalgar-class boats doing much the same thing.

Yeah, that happened and probably still does on both sides, there are many near a near miss and actual hit including UK subs trailling the Russians. The cold war and the aftermath had no real winners in ethics, a shed load of other stuff happened including taping Soviet comms lines laid on the sea bed, and I believe one of the manufacturers plates was left on a device that was discovered.

I was wondering what is happening today.

If a reply to me, I was wondering in todays world.

Both sides are at it, I do not for one minute think we are looking the other way. But are we getting in the sneaky "opps, not reading the map right and strayed a bit"?

I should imagine Uncle Sam is playing the same sort of games as Russia to some extent but I couldn't really say for sure
As there are no stories I can find via Google, but having read skunkworks by Ben rich and Leo Janos i should imagine
That there is all sorts going on over China and Russia just we don't hear about it maybe due to media blackout but who knows maybe there would be more light shed on the dark web of our shenanigans, but I would be to scared to go there to look tbh

I must have just stepped off the banana boat then, because I don't hear any reports or see anything online that suggests Russian fighter jets are having to be regularly scrambled to intercept any US long range bombers or RAF incursions into Russian 'areas of interest' - whatsoever.

Yes, we are all pointing high powered optics at each other from space, and yes, mutual electronic eavesdropping is a given the world over. But the cold war is supposed to be over, and to brazenly fly near another country's shores in (a probably fully armed knowing those tts) what amounts to the equivalent of the USAF's B2 Bomber is taking the piss. I wouldn't be surprised if the Russian pilots have been instructed to rip their tops off and stick the finger up when a Typhoon comes alongside, just for good measure.

He's clearly trying to make a macho point against Europe, and in particular NATO, by pestering Norwegian, British and Portuguese air defenses. But it's all a bit childish isn't it?

Possibly not RAF as we don't have the hardware. But it happens to the US quite a lot.

It restarted a while ago. NATO expansion into eastern Europe and the baltic States didnt help. neither did overt/covert support for pro-western factions in Georgia and the Ukraine, or the overthrowing of Russian-puppet dictators.

ALL nations do this if they have the capability. The Russians do it to us, the US does it to them and to China,

Of course he's trying to make a point. But it's also going to be useful training for Russian pilots. But as I keep saying this sort of thing happens all the time.

Armed bombers!

How about the Ohio SSBN all over the globe probably parked just off coastal waters of many nations?

They're all at it.

Go buy any Russian book on military aircraft, or Western book on military aircraft, and the pages are full of the bombers being 'escorted' away by the nations fighters.
