I was using it in the sense that Clarkson a good writer, not a great writer. He's a hack, he's a wordsmith and he knows what he's doing on a page. That alone is an unusual skill, which few posses, and he makes a good living because of it.

Others have pointed out, Clive James rates Clarkson's abilities and he is a [i]very[i/] good writer. Not quite the 1st 11 (as Antonia Fraser was said to have told him, when she knocked him back) but a very good writer, none the less.

As for Self, clearly he's not your cup of tea. But with several, well received, literary novels he can claim a much higher status than Clarkson.

And, yes, I'm willing to write it in a public forum because I envy both Clarkson's and Self's abilities.
Writing is all about command of the language. Clarkson has that, and more. He isn't trying to produce Harry Potter, but instead he writes for a TV programme. The thing is that he leads the field. Much of TG's success - and it is a phenomenon - is down to him. His column is always worth reading if only for the way he writes it.

I'll join you in being envious of his abilities with a pen.

And Self.

If the term Clarkson used once is so offensive, why did the Telegraph print it ten times?

Still think this is a load of crap bigged up by the idiotic PC brigade. Ofcom got 2, that TWO, complaints.

People need to get a sense of humour.

Took them long enough.

What a tedious read, even the BBC representative seemed to think the matter is done and dusted.

Ofcom...

Waste of money, waste of space, waste of everything, upholding what is significantly trivial, ignoring what is significantly important, since 2002 and striving to achieve new heights of irrelevance, day by pointless day.

Now I can sort of understand the ruling...not that it really means anything...but I'm confused on how you make a distinction about a 'deliberate use of a racist term'.

Can anyone now send a complaint about the use of a term in any tv show/film now?

No. It's because it was scripted and had passed thorough a number of hands before it was broadcast. They built a whole bridge in order to deliver a racist punchline.

If it had been a spontaneous quip he might, just, have got away with it - even then the judgement suggests that it should have been edited out.

Sorry, what? What bit did't you understand?

Do you mean you don't understand plain English, or do you think that TG is completely spontaneous and unscripted?

So when I watch a Tarantino film that delivers lots of racist lines...that has been scripted, in order to deliver a racist line. I'm genuinely confused.
