I always thought the term "professionally offended" was a joke, turns out I was wrong and there is a whole industry set up for it

I think she'd look better with a bit of weight on. I'd be pleased to accompany her to a slap up meal to celebrate her winning her case if she likes.

Those who constantly nitpick and strive to find new ways to be offended are the real racists IMO.

Exactly as he wanted, we are now talking about Top Gear on Internet forums as, no doubt, other people are, around the world. He's a shock jock on the TV instead of radio and I wouldn't be surprise if he complained about himself just to get more coverage

So you believe the 'slope' remark was a deliberate racial slur to court publicity for one of the worlds most popular TV shows?

Chaps, the 'million pounds' isn't her claim. It is the estimate of the costs to the BBC...
Yep, the headline of the article I saw was misleading "actress suing BBC for £1million"

I am, or rather was, an actor in a partly known children's channel's TV show about some South Asian ninja students. Or would have been had the pilot made it through the focus groups.

That was actually a painful experience, not only because my complete lack of talent was exposed but also because one of the children in the group, a racist brat, described me as that "double left legged, cack handed #¥€<" noting that I looked like I could barely stand - it had been a difficult period which Viet Red extra strong lager helped me through, hence the wobbles - let alone fight.

So, your offensive comment has not only wounded my national pride but has brought back terrible memories. in fact, you have publicly slighted my countrymen (and women, mustn't be sexist) too. Therefore, I have instructed my lawyers 'Righteously Indignant, Correctness Counts and Craven' to proceed with a claim for £1000000 for racially aggravated damage.

I look forward to seeing you in Court.

Yours

"Actress suing BBC for ridiculous PC bullst" would be closer to the mark, the monetary figure is irrelevant.

She is a sour faced old bint no one has heard of. I'm filing her under my Diane Abbott file. The waste of space file.

Apparently 'slope' is a 'derogatory' term for people of Asian descent...

I never felt offended by it...
Judging by your username you're the "wrong" kind of Asian as far as this slur goes.
So is the complainant!

The english translation for the Asian city I live in (Osaka) is 'big slope'. Never realised it was offensive.

Didn't any of you who watched the programme think that was a strange scene? I remember thinking it was a bit odd that they seemed to be going on about the slope but it didn't occur to me that the word slope was being used with racist intent because it isn't a word I often hear used that way, though I was aware of it from the film Romper Stomper.

This just comes across are very weird and cringe worthy.

How would they prove that he was indeed using the word in a derogatory sense? I guess they wouldn't/couldn't and this is just some publicity for an actress with a somewhat limp career.

OR having watched too much house of cards recently and seeing conspiracy everywhere, maybe the BBC upset the actress in question and this was an opportunity to try and muddy their face....

But yeh, slope is a new one on me too.

Clarkson knows what he's doing everytime he presses certain buttons. I'd like to see him get some comeuppance but what has happened here is exactly what he would have wanted. I know the term slope is used to decribe Asians, and saw the scene, but only now make the connection. That complainant has an extremely high-res racism detector.

It was quite clearly meant in the context subject of the complaint, and at the time I did think it was one of those Clarksonisms that might cause controversy, but really, is it that offensive? Who's the judge if whether someone is offended or not?

As someone has said, the term specifically refers* to Orientals (perhaps even just to Vietnamese?). So why does this Indian woman think it has anything to do with her? As a white European, I have as much right to be offended as she does

* I've only seen or heard the term 'slope' in 'Nam books/films. Is it even still in use?

You don't have to be the victim to not like something.
