When watching the episode it didn't even register as meaning anything other than the bridge wasn't level. I didn't even register someone on the bridge. Naive probably but, not being a term I've heard more than a few times maybe that's why it failed to register?

Quite. People that "get offended" or say things like "how very rude" are often weak-minded individuals that are afraid to look at their own shortcomings. If they objectively believed Clarkson was being racist, then they would just pity him for being an ignorant anachronism and watch something else instead.
