Nigel Farage today began putting in place the frontbench team he wants to fight the general election for UKIP.

North West MEP Steven Woolfe will take over as Migration spokesman but also retain a role as Financial Affairs spokesman. Meanwhile Eastern MEP Patrick O'Flynn becomes Economic spokesman.

Nigel Farage said: "I can think of nobody better than Steven to develop and communicate policy in the absolutely crucial area of migration, which opinion surveys show is now the number one issue for voters.

"He is already brimming with ideas as to how UKIP can deliver the firm but fair immigration system that the British public craves but which is not on offer from any of the other parties.

"I have also asked him to retain a role as Financial Affairs spokesman in recognition of his expertise in the field of financial services. It is a lot of responsibility but I am confident he will take it in his stride.

"I am also very pleased that Patrick has agreed to become Economics spokesman, responsible for setting out our macroeconomic positions and honing our message on tax and spending issues.

"My reshuffle is underway and there will be lots of new appointments announced very soon to ensure that we use the best of the great breadth of talent UKIP now has at its disposal."

Mr Woolfe said: "This is a very exciting challenge going into a general election. UKIP won the migration debate in the European elections, but I know we can win even bigger if we make some space for a positive message on migration which answers the concerns of the public while also recognising the contribution that many migrants have made to our society.

"I am delighted to continue as Financial Affairs spokesman and to continue to make the case for an industry that employs around two million people in Britain, including over 115,000 in the North West."

Mr O'Flynn, who served as UKIP Director of Communications and Campaign Director during the European election campaign, said: "I am really looking forward to this new challenge of developing an economic message that is about promoting growth and enterprise on one hand, but also delivering fairness and restoring a sense of hope for millions of hard-working families who have seen their living standards plummet."

Obviously the Ashcroft poll is a snapshot but it's an interesting snapshot.

The dopy interactive graphs on the Telegraph site seem to be misbehaving but you get the gist. The new figures should be the right hand graph.

Also key point. Far from having a post Euro snooze it seems that party workers for UKIP are knocking on many more doors than the others.

The analysis ignores the LD as irrelevant.

I wish they were, but there's a strong chance that Clegg will remain as Deputy PM to Weird Ed.

Which would be a bugger, as that would mean I'd lost my tenner speculation at 99/1 that he'll get kicked out of Sheffield Hallam.

Nuttal and Woolfe have been in the public eye for a while now (Woolfe in particular is a pretty impressive orator - very media friendly) although I guess if I were digging up dirt in CCHQ, I'd hold onto it until UKIP were back in the news, say, leading up to an election.

Woolfe is impressively calm. Comes across as unflusterable, black and white, if a little robotic (which I don't mind).

I am not sure that's the best of ideas. What does he bring to the party?

Probably disaster. Ukip needs floating voters and Labour voters.

You'll be hard pushed to get any disaffected Labour voter changing allegiance to Ukip if it has a well-known Chipping Norton set toff in your ranks.

Telegraph: Labour says UKIP will deliver the election to Labour

Telegraph said:
Polling by Lord Ashcroft, a Tory peer, has shown that of those people who backed Ukip in this year’s European elections, 52 per cent had voted Conservative in 2010. Only 15 per cent were former Labour voters.

Labour sources say the party’s private polling suggests a similar split, leading Mr Miliband’s team to conclude that Ukip is a bigger threat to the Tories than Labour.
“The Tories lose a lot more than we do from a decent Ukip performance,” said a senior Labour campaign source. “The whole election could hang on how many of their current voters stick with them next May.”
For the sake of balance:

Telegraph said:
One Conservative MP said: “Ukip is not just a dark-blue party. They are picking up votes in Grimsby and in Bradford and other key Labour seats.
“Yet again Ed Miliband’s office seems to be about 10 years behind the curve. While they are taking votes from the Tories, Ukip are also taking votes away from Labour which could cancel out any benefit Miliband sees.”
Of course, if you genuinely believe there is no practical difference between Labour and the Conservatives, you won't care about this debate. If, on the other hand, you fear a Labour government, then you should think carefully before voting UKIP if you live in a seat that is remotely marginal.

Indeed, his constant bleating about this possibility is getting tiresome now.

It matters not how many times he is told its the Tories who will determine the outcome by their behaviour, rather than UKIP responding to it.

Perhaps if CMD had not slagged off anyone considering voting UKIP, he wouldn't need those like ZOD trying to scare voters into going Tory.
Predictable reaction.

The new factor here is that Labour appears to be reassuring itself that UKIP will see it home.

You don't want to think about it. You are in the "they're all the same" camp. There are others who are not.

Seems to me the record has been changed.

Record Side A: wasted vote won't affect anything complete irrelevance.

Record side B: vote will decide who sits in Downing street.

Either way we need to play the klaxon noise that David Jacobs used to play to signal a Miss on Juke Box Jury.

Yes I am that old, though can only just about remember it.
