The no tax on minimum wage sounds daft as you coukd get peopl on a decent (by comparison)wage of £9 asking the boss for a pay cut.
Why?

You need to explain that one...
Well I don't know the exact maths butthere will be an amount above the minimum wage that acually pays less net due to tax. That means you could be better off on minimum wage of £6.50p per hour than you would be on £7 or £8 per hour and maybe even £9 depending on the level of tax.

Does not work like that though.

You only pay tax on earnings over the threshold, not all of it.

Ohhhh, It wasn't worded as an allowance.

you did not expect a fully worded answer in a press preview did you?

current min wage is what? £6.31/hour? that's ~£12K pa, my guess is what he's saying is that they will move the current £10K threshold to ~£12K and the higher rate threshold to £45K.

All the current bands are marginal (except for high pay losing their tax allowance iirc). Why would you expect this to be different from what is normal unless specified?

Actually I would have expected it especially as UKIP have on more than one occasion spoken about a complete overhaul of the tax system and a flat tax payed at the same rate by everybody.

I had that in mind when I read the post.

If it had been a 12K tax allowance I would not have commented but even using the wording that is there it is still wrong as those that earn the minimum wage will still be liable for tax unless they limit their hours.

they dumped the flat tax idea a while back as nobody (read the media) could understand it and started wailing about how unfair it would be.

as for the £12K, that's me guessing, based on 37.5 hour week at minimum wage.

Sorry, I was just trying to explain my confusion and why I typed something that looked daft.

Just seen Farage on newsnight - what a very reasonable chap, such a contrast to watching Salmond and Darling last night in the Scottish referendum debate.

Douglas Carswell, has announced defection to UKIP.

First MP a tad early. Now to get one elected properly under the UKIP envelope.

I am seriously impressed - the news report says he'll resign and fight a by-election under UKIP. That shows a respect for voters many politicians lack.

very much so

easy to just swap benches, another to be brave enough to put yourself back in front of the electorate.

(question, whoever wins this by-election, will their seat be up again in the general election? - I assume it is, but if this ends up less than 6 months before the general election seems all a bit pointless re-fighting it?)

Yes it will. I can't remember the time period of the top of my head but if it was too close to a General Election then there would be no By-election rather than the seat not being contested at General Election.

In 1997 there was a By-election in Wirral South on 27th February and the seat was re-contested on 1st May in the General Election.

What did I say earlier? (top line)

now Carswell. Wonder if it's the new migration figures that did it?

Great news, Carswell is a proper small government libertarian guy and he belongs in UKIP.

Now it's Dan Hannans turn to defect

Or Jacob Rees-Mogg perhaps?

Wouldn't be surprised if the UKIP / Tory pact issue raises its ugly head again.
