Bless. Pat Kane v Brian Wilson on newsnight discussing a glasgow games impact on the vote.

To paraphrase;

PK; wandering around the wonderful city I found a vibe that things are now possible and a national pride which bodes well for vote.

BW; oh fk off. Can't we just enjoy the sport?

So after all the work and investment to stabilise these banks, it could end up being a yes vote that causes a run on them.

Scotland has immense national pride. And we don't need to hold a games or leave the UK to show it.

In reality LBG and RBS could move head quarters to London but still run there finance operations from Edinburgh safe guarding jobs etc (kind of like off shoring). However I think if these two firms wanted to move to the UK as it becomes then given they are doing it for support from the BoE there might be an argument for job creation down south etc also does a retaill market of 5.5m people really matter versus 400m people in the EU you can have as customers.

If LBS and RBS base in UK, how do this affect government income (tax) from them?

Would all corp tax the goto rUK, not iScot? Would this change be significant for Scottish revenues - e.g those boasted about by SNP in GERS?

Most banks look to transfer profits to low tax areas (where they incorporate) and losses to high tax areas. So the rUK would get the tax save local income tax's on staff (who in this scenario are now in rUK anyway). But as RBS has only just annouced a pre tax profit its not like the revenu has been racking it in.

As an aside in case of RBS it pays tax to the goverment and whats left it pays in dividends to shareholders (less other costs) an in this case share holder is the UK goverment so win win for them.

Is there much transactional tax in banking - e.g. like VAT in retail, but not VAT obviously. Insurance attracts some tax, and I guess tax on interest paid on deposits, which could be substantial?

Biggest amount might be PAYE from the staff?

Thousands of employees at an average of perhaps £5k each PA.

They make "F all"?

RBS shares have jumped after the bank said today it expects pre-tax profits to double to £2.65bn for the first half of the year.

Think that estimate is on the low side?

But RBS is much much more than a retail clearing bank in Scotland!

Might be, don't think it's on the high side anyway. Didn't do any particularly taxing wink calculations...
