Both spectators and England competitors are displaying the union flag in the velodrome! I'll go get a photo if anyone doubts this. Admittedly there are far more st George's crosses but that's not the point.

On the other hand, I witnessed a spectator being told to put his Scottish flag away in sochi.

Not my rule, Commonwealth Games Rule, only the flags of competitors allowed in the venues.

So; no Union Jacks, no Stars and Stripes, no KwikFit flags...
SOURCE PLEASE
Here

6.17. any flags or banners larger than 1 metre x 2 metres,
or with lightweight handles longer than 1 metre,
and/or flags normally associated with
(i) countries not participating in the Games or
(ii) causes, affiliations or organisations;.

The UK is not participating, and the Union Jack is not the Commonwealth of Nations' flag.

It hasn't been the British Commonwealth for quite some time.

Just putting this out there:

The Commonwealth of nations consists of 53 member states......one of those listed is "The United Kingdom".

So even though the component countries of the UK are allowed to compete separately - England, Scotland, Wales and NI aren't listed as members individually.

It therefore follows that competitors are actually competing as UK/England, UK/Scotland etc - and so the union flag does in effect represent them all.
The nats are trying to make out that the only reason someone could be waving a union jack is to make a political statement and it shouldn't be allowed at the games. They're really boring like that.
Maybe people just waving a saltire should be considered nationalist bigots.

The UK is participating, and no amount of nationalist bile and spin will change that.

Arguing about flags. It really is that pathetic isn't it.

All of the members of the UK are - ergo - the UK is.

The fact that the UK (as a commonwealth member country) chooses to split itself into teams for the commonwealth games is kinda irrelevant to the fact that the UK is participating.

Scotland isn't even a member of the Commonwealth. Fact. wink

Edit: Flag willie waving aside.
Genuine question for you.

If an iScotland is going to be so wealthy. Why did John Swinney write that an independent Scotland will have to cut benefits and spending on defence? As they can't afford it.

Semantics.

That refers to the Union Jack as part of another flag, such as Australia's. As you know.

It's inappropriate for the stand alone Union Jack to be flown at the games, just as the Chinese, the Russian and Brazilian flags have no place at the games.

End of.

You are correct as there will be no navy ships at the games.

The Union Flag however is allowed.
Lol I said that ages ago and someone shared a source which said that's an out of date view and it can be called the Union Flag or the Union Jack and the old sea faring requirements are outdated. Or something like that.

It`s `inappropriate` for the Union flag to be flown in the UK by one of the host nations of a sporting event?

This thread is scraping the barrel.

Dear God you Nats are a sad bunch of twisted minds. It's a flag, your national flag, a Commonwealth country flag, there's absolutely nothing wrong with waving it.

More complete nonsense from our house Nationalists. China, Russia and Brazil are not, have never been Commonwealth countries. GB formed it, and is its mopst prominent member - guess where the Commonwealth secretariat is based - GB you berk

If someone wants to wave a Chinese flag do we really care? It'd be pretty daft to do it, but hey, who cares?

All you have to do is add up the medals from england, scotland, wales and NI and you'll get the total for the UK.

These are the four regions that make up the UK.

Didn't you do that at junior school?
