Scottish Referendum / Independence - Vol 5
Discussion
At work today a colleague came in and sat down proclaiming that his postal vote was done.
I asked if he would be ok disclosing what which side it went to.
He replied, "I voted yes, I believe it`s for the best". I replied , "You`re in the company of 3 No voters (to which he was genuinely surprised) and said, Gove me ONE good reason for voting yes.
This was his answer and I sh*t you not.
"Because if we stay part of the UK then there`s a chance we could leave the European Union and I voted Yes because we might get into the European Union."
I then said, "So you`re saying you voted for something that might happen as opposed to voting for something that might not happen? What kinda logic is that?"
He then went on to say also it was said on the TV debate that Alistair Darling slipped up and admitted we could `keep the pound` and that that he knew that Better together were `bluffing`.
If ever was a reason to slate democracy this is it.

An edited YES image. You could at least come up with your own ideas! Like the patronising BT lady - genius!
I like the way Scots refer to the no campaign as BT.Made all the better that for some years to come Murrayfield is going to be known as 'BT Murrayfield' as it sits near the middle of Edinburgh.
Anywhere else it would remind you of our 'much loved' telecoms company...

Well, at least something about the Yes campaign is genius, just a pity it wasn't at least one of the following:
Thier plans for the Economy,
Their plans for pensions,
Their plans for re-entry to the EU,
Their plans to avoid capital flight,
Their proposals regarding university fees,
Their plans for shipbuilding on the clyde.......
Now to be fair when AS was talking to the workers at BAE Systems earlier this month he did tell them that in an independent Scotland they would be able to bid for MoD contracts, along with the rest of Europe. Or to put it more succinctly, they would be stuffed.Thier plans for the Economy,
Their plans for pensions,

Would that be counted or would it be classed as spoiled?
I think it would count as a spoiled paper and the vote wouldn't be counted. The instructions are clear, to place an X in the box and not to make any other marks on the paper.Edited by tim0409 on Friday 29th August 19:34

I'm pretty sure that would count as a valid ballot paper. For my sins I am the Conservative polling agent in my local authority area for the referendum, and the returning officer has very prescriptive criteria for deciding what is or isn't a valid paper, but essentially it revolves around whether or not you can ascertain voter intention - from the paper shown the fact the "x" is in the box is fairly decisive. At the end of the count ballot papers like this will be gathered up and the returning offer will go through them one by one with the agents and explain his reasons for his decision as to whether or not they are counted.
I stand corrected Are there seriously many people out there who cannot tell the difference between just using the pound and monetary union, with the support of the BoE?
I could imagine that a few people would not get it but, surely, for the love of god and an average education system, most people can tell the difference? Cant they?
I really do not want to see thousands of Scottish people failing to understand the currency issue, thinking that simply using the pound without BoE support will be fine.
I do not want to look at Scotland and have to conclude that a significant minority of the people of that country are stupid. Not just a bit stupid. But really, really stupid.
Help me have some faith that they are not that dumb. Please.
If they are that dumb, then they are doomed.

The chilling thing is that AS knows this and is happy to exploit it for his own ends. Yes, Holyrood politicians really are morally superior to Westminster ones.I could imagine that a few people would not get it but, surely, for the love of god and an average education system, most people can tell the difference? Cant they?
