The party have gone straight to apologise as well, rather than an attempt to defend his reputation.

There seems to have been an instant and total admission of guilt.

It all seems very strange. I usually don't like the accusation = definite guilt culture that is creeping in through the media (mass and social) - but the writing is definitely on the wall vis a vis his guilt if no one is contesting it.

But it does make you wonder why, when you natural instinct would surely to be to defend your loved ones reputation....
+1

If the wife didn't know about it why is she apologising straight away - after all these were only allegations at this stage however her instant apology has essentially corroborated the accusations.

And the wife bedded Will Self's 16 yo brother reportedly.

Did Will Self know Freud, they both had/have the same affectatious pseudo-intellectual drawl?
I have no time for either of the people you mention, but to call either of them pseudo-intellectual is frankly a bit silly.

I think he means so obviously affected and intended to falsely impress beyond the actuality. Not unlike legal robes.

“Lord Steel, the Liberal Democrat peer, has admitted believing in 1979 that child abuse allegations against Sir Cyril Smith were true, but did nothing to assess whether he was a continuing risk to children.

The former Liberal party leader said the late MP for Rochdale confirmed in a conversation that reports of child sexual abuse in the media were accurate.”

“Be careful what you say about Cyril Smith because nothing has been proved against him at all, it’s all been scurrilous hearsay and so far we are waiting for the final outcome of the inquiry” – former Liberal leader David Steel on the allegations against Cyril Smith last year

Worth linking the the Boris Johnson thread.

Why bother looking at historic child sex abuse,eh?

I bet they have spaffed plenty of stuff up the wall thinking it about it.

Steel’s suspension didn’t last long.

“David Steel's suspension 'lifted by Lib Dems'”

“The deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats admitted to Iain Dale she has no idea why Lord Steel's suspension has been lifted.”
