The s of a captain is on trial now.
He says he was confused.

So confused that he seems to have removed all identification then made his way off the ship apparently together with all/most of his crew.

No-one can come out of this looking good; the ship's officers(particularly the master) bear responsibility for handling the emergency and evacuation badly, and repeatedly overlooking gross safety violations like liferafts allegedly padlocked to cradles and a ship described as overladen to the point of instability. The ship management cannot have been ignorant of these practises and even if they did not instigate them are guilty of endorsing them. The Korean coastguard has clearly got major oversight problems if dangerous practises like this are endemic, so they are just as culpable.

A lot of people need to be put under scrutiny and possibly on trial, not just the sailors; I'm not optimistic as South Korea has form for making mariners scapegoats and allowing everyone else off scot-free.
