That was my thought Eric. They were 60 miles offshore though so seems unlikely.

It seems there might have been an impact of some sort.

BBC said:
It is not yet clear what caused the incident, but witnesses described hearing an impact, before the ship listed and quickly sank.

One passenger told the YTN news channel: "We heard a big thumping sound and the boat stopped.
Very sad news indeed.

If it is, it will certainly be the last such stunt they pull. I can't see how it would go unpunished.

Worse I fear.

Herald of Free Enterprise partially capsized in the relatively smallow waters of Zeebruge Harbour - the shallow water meaning she settled on her side rather than turing all the way over and gave the pooe souls within some chance of escape.

This one looks like a complete capsize in deep water.

Ferries have very shallow draft with a lot of the hull above water. Once water gets onto the car deck, they will go over in seconds. How the water gets in is usually the main issue.

A big thump and sudden stop would suggest she has hit something big enough to hole her.

Sounds like the passengers were told to remain in their cabins, only one liferaft launched as well. Whatever the root cause of the sinking it looks like the potential seriousness of the situation wasn't realised quickly enough or the emergency procedures weren't robust enough. I wonder if there was some reluctance on the part of the crew to acknowledge the situation they found themselves in.

Indeed, seems the emergency response procedures failed completely.

Looks like safe return to port requirements are going to be even higher on everyone's agenda - gawd knows how RoRo ferries will meet the grade...

I'd say likeliest cause is collision with a dropped container - scary bds and lots of them bobbing around. Damage control procedures really need to be made a lot more robust.

Would a container really do enough damage to sink a ship like that?

It didn't look like there was damage to the bow though, at least I don't think I saw any pictures of damage suggesting the ship had a head on collision with a submerged object. That being said the Costa Concordia only had damage to its side I think.

Looks like it was possibly a rock.

A good site this. Interesting reading the other cases, and the amount of updates is surprising. It's amazing what goes on offshore with out us knowing, as it's updated almost daily!

The 6825 ton passenger ship Sewol which sank in 90 meters of water off Jindo Island, South Korea. The vessel sent out a distress call after striking an underwater rock near Gwanmae Island. The vessel remained afloat for 8 hours before it finally rolled over and sank. Initial reports state the vessel took 18 minutes after the initial grounding before it sent out a distress call. The crew during this time urged passengers to stay calm, but not to prepare to evacuate the vessel.

Authorities have revised that over 290 passengers/crew are still missing which 244 were high school students. The students were on a four-day school trip to Jeju Island. Reports state some students sent text messages soon after the accident. Divers are exploring the sunken vessel fearing that many on board were trapped below deck.
