Britain should be unashamedly “evangelical” about its Christian faith and actively hand churches and other faith groups a greater role in society, David Cameron has insisted.
Personally I didn't like it when Blair went all weirdo religious on us and I don't like this stuff much either. I feel that a persons religion should be their own business and shouldn't impinge on others.I don't normally comment on stuff like this as it generally gets me really wound up.
I have a deal with my Father (a born again Catholic). I don't mind him going to church and believing whatever it is that he believes, but do not try and put your views on me or try to preach to me.
Religion and belief has no place in politics. Religion, to me at least, is a crutch and I understand why people need it. I also understand that it can play a large part in certain communities, but that's where it needs to stay. This country is not one big community and cannot be run that way.
DC probably needs to tread carefully here.
Saying that, I fear that I am in the minority these days.

Amongst the happy-clappy, middle class Boden lifestylers, going to church - being nominally Christian - is still very much one of the various (tedious) things to be seen to be doing. IMHO, this is just another example of how desperately out of tune CMD and the rest of his ilk are is with the man on the street.
Slightly misleading title, as he said we shouldn't be afraid to accept religious belief can have a positive role in society. I don't see how he could ever be accused of promoting an evangelical Christian agenda, as his views and actions on topic such as gay marriage would seem at odds with such teachings. He was also talking in the Church Times, so very much preaching to the converted. Personally, as an atheist whose stance has softened over time, I'm not overly bothered by religious groups having a role in society as long as said role isn't used as an overt platform or is favoured over those holding alternative views. There's more than enough shouting on PH about the loss of our heritage, and like it or not, Christianity is a big part of that.

He could be seen as saying a polite 'fk off' to the kind of faiths that so exercise kippers.
Trouble is, a large number of kippers aren't really [i[that[/i] bothered about which imaginary friends people pin their hopes on, just so long as they integrate and tolerate the rest of us.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
