I've never understood how or why they sell - if you scan read the first (and possibly the last) few paragraphs you get what little actual information that the journalist present, and even that is scant and often plainly inaccurate. You could get about 50% of the information by a very cursory scan of the thing and have read it in the time it takes to have a good dump.

It is really a triumph of marketing over content, or a damning indictment of people desire or ability to absorb facts.

The rags always say people quaff champagne and sup beer. It's like they haven't progressed from the 1950s.

It's a combination of lazy journalism (how many staff writers for the rags have realised their dreams?) and also reader expectations. Good example would be my brother in law - he takes The Sun Monday-Friday and The Sunday Times on a Sunday when he has the time to read and digest it properly. Although whenever I get the chance to buy The Sunday Times I find myself reading the supplements all through the following week.
