I think the ludicrous comparison with Hitler will be doing Putin more of a favour.
But it's not ludicrous. Putin's tactics on the Ukraine mirror those of the Nazis in the Sudetenland and elsewhere. Get down to your library and read some history.
Unlike Hitler Putin is re-occupying land that was Russian until about 20 years ago.

I still don't see the comparison frankly.

20 years ago was when Russia signed a treaty guaranteeing the territorial integrity of the Ukraine. Which they have now broken.

Even that doesn't explain why Russia is trying to destabilise Eastern Ukraine, or sent troops into Georgia in 2008 having first issued Russian passports to tens of thousands of Georgian citizens which they then claimed to be "protecting".

All straight from the Nazi playbook. Read some history - then you'll understand.

Bluebarge,

Crimea was part of Russia (together with the rest of Ukraine) until 1991. So the statement of 'about 20 years ago.' is correct.

They seem to be doing rather better than the "inherited privilege" ones from Eton.

Do be brief.

Let's see. Starting with a basic definition of fascism, for example:

http://www.rense.com/general37/char.htm

The Putin team currently gets pretty much 12 out of 14 (the unions and the intellectuals/arts are still sightly off their radar). And it will get worst soon, with guys like this as their main ideologues, with ample media presence, access to Kremlin and his books being used in the official military curriculum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksandr_Dugin .

What's not to like?

They don't come much straighter than him.

D'you know, I rather fancy him. In a manly, positive sort of way.

All that without picture of him wrestling bear? C'mon.

No, it was part of Russia from the late 18th century until 1954, when it was transferred to the Ukraine. Ukraine and Russia were both parts of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics until 1991. the USSR and Russia are, and never were, the same thing.

Although Charles has no formal political responsibilities, and therefore should not voice a political opinion, he unarguably does hold a position of considerable influence as, currently, representative of the Queen. Wars have been started on the back of rather stupid outbursts by irresponsible but privileged holders of lesser office. He should just shut up. His father is enough example of a big gob to be going on with.
There are exceptionally complicated diplomatic events taking place to try to mitigate a series of human disasters on these events without unqualified idiots (I mean unqualified in diplomacy - not being an idiot) muddying the waters.

Charlie Chuckles left school with two A-levels in History and French, grades B and C.

His son Prince "Rodney Trotter" Harry left Eton with two A-Levels in Art and Geography, grades B and D.

No wonder they're all an embarrassment to the country, not just Charlie's brother Andrew Duke of York who was reported by the United States Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, discussing bribery in Kyrgyzstan and the investigation into the Al-Yamamah arms dealing.

They are a complete shower yet Brits keep lapping it up. Bring on the Republic.
I wouldn't belittle anyone of his age based on their A level results. Good grief!

What is ludicrous is comparing the two based on one thing that they have in common. Annexation isn't solely a product of Nazi Germany.

It would be just as helpful to compare the Russians with the Israelis. Or even with the Ireland being made part of the UK.

He's an old geezer who says what he likes, most of the time I suspect he's just bored and trying to get something other than glazed rictus smiles out of the endless lines of people he shakes hands with; I can't think of any time he's ever spoken on any subject that even peripherally had a diplomatic sensitivity. Brian on the other hand is just a gimp who won't stick to the safe areas of talking to plants and slagging architects.

Some of the land Hitler took back was land that was part of the German Empire until after WW1 which was less than 20 years before he started taking it back.

Take your point. However the training has been largely wasted (at great expense - ours rather than his). Given his ridiculous niavete in making highly personal phone calls on a mobile phone, to his obvious failure to grasp the seriousness of the events in Ukraine and the ongoing terrible fate of innocent ordinary people as a result, his unguarded comments to a complete stranger show a total lack of diplomatic nouse.

The possibility of escalation to a much larger conflict I'm sure is appreciated, on here at least, and you might have thought that he was privy to rather specialist advice from F&C Office updates. How much behind the scenes work do you reckon he has wrecked?

In international diplomacy saving face is paramount and likening a Russian to A.H. is tantamount to a challenge to a duel. He may be 'a good bloke' but his position as the Queen's representative reflects the precarious position he is in and ought to be a brake on his garrulousness.
