Consultation not regulation (yet), but one of the obvious contradictions is the concern about the amount of traffic on London's roads vs suggesting preventing the option of customers sharing cars.

For their part, Uber want less regulation for the cabbies, rather than more regulation for private hire.

I guess the customers just want to get to where they're going.

Load of bks, they're not worried about the traffic, or anything else. They're just feeling pressure to do something about it as Uber is growing so hugely. I got the email from uber yesterday and I agree with every single thing they said. TFL and their fking trainset - realise they dropped the ball by allowing Uber to operate as it does and now trying to backtrack citing ridiculous reasoning as the catalyst.

If they want to do something about the amount of traffic then they should look into the countless empty buses rolling around the city doing nothing useful, and surely of all the traffic on the roads, Uber which are by and large hybrid honda's are nowhere near as the agriculture grade diesel black cabs belching out st at all hours.

78.616 (at time of writing) signatures in support of Uber in less than 24 hours

Looks like TfL's plan to fool all of the people all of the time may backfire

said TfL’s move came after a period in which legislation had been dropped to accommodate Uber. “They’re using the consultation to reinstate legislation that we worked under for years.”
Anyone know what legislation was dropped or is this rubbish?

It wasn't dropped, it was circumvented. The meter rule, for example - says something like only black cabs are allowed to use a meter but wasn't written with smartphone tech in mind so Uber have a way around it (meter being on phone not fixed to cab). Also only black cabs are allowed to be flagged, everything else has to be pre-booked and some suggest the way Uber works is more like flagging than pre-booking.

Which is bullst.

VERY rarely are there any right where you are, I don't buy that 3 min avg wait either, so often they may appear to be 3 mins away, but are on a one way st heading the wrong way etc, I reckon 5 min wait is more like it.

Both technicalities the hackney drivers are desperately trying to hang onto.

The facts are simple: people in London like Uber and the way it works.

People are fed up with having to put up with black cab drivers who argue about tips, refuse to take fares, drive past pretending not to have seen a person trying to flag them, rudely conduct their personal life on the phone, react angrily to route suggestions (despite the Knowledge, many don't have a clue in areas that are not their usual patch). This is a minority of drivers, but not a small one.

This - and what it costs. Generally peanuts compared to black cab, more comfortable too.

Not to detract from your overall point, but IME this is just as common with Uberx drivers. Advantage is you can mark them down for it, though.

123k signatures now.

Sizeable amount, but is it enough to cause a change of heart at TFL?

who do we write to at tfl to object to this crap?
9Signatures on a petition aren't as effective imo)

You respond to the consultation just like anyone else can at https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/tph/private-hire-... Might be a very good idea to do so. They won't care in the slightest about a petition.

Warning: it is very long - presumably to deter responses.
