London has, again, for the 3rd time in 4 years, topped the rankings as the world's most popular city, by volume and by revenue. No other British cities get even a sniff. Well ahead of Paris, NY and many others. A great achievement:

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/london-seals...

But why is London so popular and rich, and the rest of the UK so unpopular and poor?

What can be done to solve the gap between London and the rest of the UK?

Not a popcorn or troll question. Genuinely interested to hear thoughts on the topic, as it is a major national issue (or should be).

There are so many of these polls that use their own metrics. This is one way of measuring which city is best others disagree.

Personally I'm London born and bred and love it. Saying that I've lived elsewhere and you can get a lot more quality of life for a lot less. Still I know people who have sacrificed an awful lot to move to/live in London and I often struggle to understand why. Neither can they but it's something you can't put your finger on you either get it or you don't.

Not sure why the OP calls the rest of the UK rubbish either, unless wanting to be provocative!

I'm happy for londoners if they're happy.

However, i just can't stand the place. Ok, it's a better city than birmingham or glasgow, but it's just naff compared to york, bath or edinburgh.

"What has to be done"? Nothing - if everywhere was the same, life would be boring. Although bulldozing birmingham would bring up the national average.

Then send your shirts to the dry cleaners to get the filth off them.

Being a highly rated city just makes it top of a list of places to avoid.

I used to live in a Honor Oak and work in Moorgate: London was a PITA.

Recently I enjoyed an extended stay at a West End hotel at someone else's expense: living and working there, with pretty much all of the West End in walking distance was great. Unfortunately it requires and unfeasibly large amount of dosh to sustain.

I like London, especially when I can go home after working there or for fun. One of those quaint places that are OK in small doses. I suppose for the tourist, liz and co are a big draw as is the rest of the history. A sniff of the old Empire maybe?

I have to agree. I used to have to go there occasionally but not now, so I very rarely do. Perhaps when I need to pass through by train.

I can't think of anything London offers that I can't get somewhere else. Maybe the smell, noise, dirt and crowds of foreigners but I can live without those things.

I do feel sorry for those who have to live there.

I avoid the place as far as possible. Every time I have to go there I'm reminded just how unpleasant a place it is. I'm happy that Londoners are happy about living there, if they are happy that is. Almost everyone seems to have a face like a smacked arse and as miserable as sin, and seem to radiate hate from every pore towards all people within hate range.

Obviously there will be exceptions somewhere. Plus there are some spots that are bearable.

But to live and work there without the option of saying after an hour, a day, a week, a month, or whatever, stuff this hole, I'm out of here must be completely unbearable.

There are other places that are almost equally unpleasant but per the title, nope, not even close.

In terms of overall visitor numbers - no single place in the UK is likely to beat London - but is it a reasonable expectation for them to do so? London is after all the capital city and as such has many of the largest and best tourist attractions.

It also depends on how you set your metrics and how you measure success. Take a city near where I live - Liverpool. According to sources I found - Liverpool gets around 2 million 'staying' visitors per year. Per capita - that is almost double what London gets.

you need good tax incentives for companies, medium to large, to set up outside the major metropolitain areas. people will go where there is money to be made.

I grew up in Manchester and had zero interest or positivity about London until I started travelling the globe.

I can honestly say London is my favourite city to visit. It has so much, in such a relatively accessible space it is fantastic.

I wouldn't want to live in London though, I simply don't earn enough to make it a pleasant lifestyle for my family. I'll happily stick to working and flying out of London and commuting to greener pastures with much better roads biggrin

Exactly why the LEZ (Local enterprise Zones) have been setup...we've taken advantage of the incentives and setup in Bristol moving a lot of our business functions (non-revenue generating) from Bermuda to here smile

I love London - the atmosphere is great (well, perhaps not "literally").

However it does seem very dirty, run-down, "creaking at the seams" with a poor quality of life for those who live there permanently. Living "up North" in a semi rural location where we have relatively good roads, good schools, cheap housing, low crime, I wonder how much our living conditions are subsidised by London taxpayers. Perhaps it would be fairer if more of the tax revenue generated by an area stayed in that area.

Are there any statistics to show Govt spending per capita by region?
