Seriously though, I don't know why people like it.....Cultral hot spot? LOL. Beautiful people? LOL. Quality of life? LOL.
It seems to to be a case of Finance/Legal work hard, earn lots of money, have a sudden realisation it's no way to live, then go up Peaks/lakes with the money they made in LDN.
It is a cultural hotspot. There can be no question of that, to suggest anything other would be totally ridiculous.

The people here do tend to be better looking yes.

This is why people like you will never know any better than posts like this, there are so many industries that are centered around London, and its not just finance or law (did you careers advisor not tell you there were more than two jobs in the big city?) its many things.

Yes, when they have made money that they likely could not have made elsewhere (Getcarter a good example, he said in his own words) they get to have a choice of sorts about where they want to retire to, a choice that is not so freely made if you haven't got a pot to piss in...

Not sure why it's always town vs country, but what is clear is that an awful lot of parochial provincials appear to be terrified by what London offers. If you genuinely can't find any appeal you must be both completely stupid and completely lacking in imagination.

Or are you all just scared of getting your webbed feet stuck in an escalator or something?

Or perhaps we have lived there for 30 years and got sick of the traffic, smell, noise, dirt, crime, air quality, costs, anger, behaviour...etc... and have moved to somewhere much nicer?

You decided to move from a city to the countryside, seems reasonable and I suspect I might do the same full-time at some point.

Doesn't change the fact that no other city in the UK (and perhaps only one anywhere) can offer what London does. Will also say that I am very rarely, if ever, adversely affected by any of the "traffic, smell, noise, dirt, crime, air quality, costs, anger, behaviour", (actually, I might give you the traffic).

Glad to hear that... but are you sure you're in the same London? wink It's filthy! I was there in April and had to step over puke, dog st and even someone pissing against Pizza Express in Upper Street as I walked past.

I saw someone puking on the street on the Isle of Skye once and also pissing in public. Probably saw dog st too come to think of it. Didn't see a pizza express though, just some stty b&b thing which served terrible food. Locals were pretty miserable too.

See?

You''ll get that in any town in the UK, let alone London. Okay, someone spilled a coffee on the Waterloo & City Line this morning. That's it really for this month.

And then I walked past a bowling green to my air-conditioned office and got in a lift with at least 2 models (we're talking at least 8.5/10). Terrible place - please don't come here!

TBH the f8ckers that ruin the place are the provincial tourists that come here for a daytrip, what with their backward ways, getting lost on the tube and talking loudly in some horrid accent.

It's a city, with a large concentration of people, and you will inevitably be able to find mess if you want to. Seems a bit like complaining about cow pats in the countryside though.

Well, it is a bit or a cultural hotspot, isn't it? Where else is if London isn't? Not so sure about beautiful people.

A great quality of life is possible in London, but it depends what you are looking for. Obviosuly housing per pound is much smaller relative to everywhere else, and it can be much busier, but there is more to do than most other places, more is often within walking distance etc. Also, London includes the leafy suburbs, the posh central bit, the poor central bit, the East End etc which are all totally diverse.

It is not just those employed in Finance & Law that earn well in London, most professions are better paid, but I think someone living in London would need to earn more just to stay equal in terms of standard of living.

On average, a £50k job in Leeds probably gives a better standard of living than a £75k one in London, and I guess London jobs at that salary would be easier to find as well.

Nope, just sick of pricks who think anyone outside of London is "parochial provincials [who] appear to be terrified by what London offers"
I think anyone outside of London would agree that certain things appeal, however they don't necessarily outweigh the things that don't appeal.
A city full of people with opinions like yours being one of them.

I do think he has a point. Out where I am in Hampshire there is a staggering lack of knowledge of what goes on in London, what industry is here, what diversity it offers etc.

A lot of people I went to school with are living a life that would be 100% better in London, they have not made a calculation about where they are outweighing London, they just haven't or cannot even consider London as its a different world in their heads. When it really isn't. And is actually 50 mins away on the train!

You have to admit that the dirt is pretty bad. One day visiting and it's black snot when blowing your nose.

Absolute rubbish.

I cycle two hours most weekdays through Central London and never have I had black snot. Not even when they said the air was worse than Shanghai or whatever.

Never experienced it that I can remember, even when on the Tube every day.

Whilst I try to avoid the crappy bits of town wherever possible, I'd say central London is generally a lot cleaner and tidier than, say, cities like Manchester or Sheffield.

He makes a fair point though Nomdujour.

I get to travel to London at least a couple of times a month and having grown up in a large city myself I certainly don't consider myself provincial!.

I love the restaurants, the architecture, the culture, the restaurants, the atmosphere, the parks, the confidence and the restaurants. All of which are streets ahead of what you'll find in most other cities in the UK - including Birmingham! hehe

But I couldn't raise a family there. A fantastic place to spend your twenties though.

Just done a quick poll round the desk here, none of us five that live from zone 1-6 suffer with this, mixture of tube travel, bike, walking, and vespa. Utter rubbish.

Very good. Unfortunately, I have to journey to London, but you don't have to journey to the Hebrides. If the Isle of Skye is so awful, maybe don't return? Just a thought. wink As I say, I spent 30 years living in London (inner for much of it), and still work there, so know it well, and know quite how filthy it is compared to the Highlands of Scotland. Some bloke throwing up in Portree doesn't come close to the filth I have (sadly) to put up with when I return to the place of my birth.

You should try Googling it.

Next time I visit I'll blow my nose and take a picture for you wink
